Hayward House (Colchester, Connecticut)
The Hayward House is a historic house at 9 Hayward Avenue in Colchester, Connecticut. Built in 1775 and embellished in the late 19th century, it is a well-preserved 18th-century house, which has seen a number of locally prominent residents, as well as the nationally known inventor Nathaniel Hayward, who developed the process of vulcanizing rubber. and The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Description and history The Hayward House is located on the north side of Colchester's central village green, on the north side of Hayward Avenue. It is a three-story wood-frame structure, with a gambrel roof, a large central chimney, and a single-story porch extending across the front. The roof is pierced by three gabled dormers. Colchester Village Historic District
The Colchester Village Historic District encompasses most of the historic village center of Colchester, Connecticut. It is located at the junction of Route 16, Route 85, and Norwich Avenue (old Route 2). Roughly, the district extends to the northwest along Broadway Street (Route 85) as far as Jaffe Terrace; east along Norwich Avenue to just short of Pleasant Street; south along South Main Street to just north of Hall Hill Road; west along Linwood Avenue (Route 16) to just east of Kmick Lane. The historic district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1994. The Colchester Town Green is located at the center of the district. Nathaniel Hayward
Nathaniel Manley Hayward (January 19, 1808 – July 18, 1865) was a US businessman and inventor best known for selling a patent to Charles Goodyear that Goodyear later used to develop the process of vulcanization Biography Nathaniel Hayward was born in Easton, Massachusetts on January 19, 1808. Hayward met Goodyear in 1837 and shared with him the discovery he had made, almost accidentally, while working at a rubber factory in Roxbury, Connecticut. He bought some mills in Stoneham, Massachusetts, from Elisha S. Converse, which later became a small settlement called Haywardville. He died in Colchester, Connecticut on July 18, 1865.
