Hayden Hill, California
Hayden Hill (also, Providence City, Mount Hope, Hayden, Hayden City and Haydenhill) is an unincorporated community in Lassen County, California. It is located north of Lava Peak, at an elevation of 5715 feet (1742 m). The Hayden post office operated from 1871 to 1875. The Hayden Hill post office operated from 1878 to 1887, re-opened in 1888, changed its name to Haydenhill in 1895, and closed in 1912, re-opened in 1915 and closed for good in 1919. The name Providence City came from the nearby Provindence Mine. Lassen County () is a county in the northeastern portion of the U.S. state of California. As of the 2020 census, the population was 32,730. The county seat and only incorporated city is Susanville. Lassen County comprises the Susanville, California, micropolitan statistical area. A former farming, mining and lumber area, its economy now depends on employment at one federal and two state prisons; the former in Herlong and the latter two in Susanville. In 2007, half the adults in Susanville worked in one of the facilities. Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden
Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden (September 7, 1829 – December 22, 1887) was an American geologist noted for his pioneering surveying expeditions of the Rocky Mountains in the late 19th century. He was also a physician who served with the Union Army during the Civil War. Early life Ferdinand Hayden was born in Westfield, Massachusetts. As a young boy he was fascinated with all nature and wildlife, which led him into the field of medicine. He worked in Cleveland under Jared Potter Kirtland and thereafter in Albany, NY, where he worked under James Hall, of the ''Geological Survey of New York''. He graduated from Oberlin College in 1850 and from the Albany Medical College in 1853, where he attracted the notice of Professor James Hall, state geologist of New York, through whose influence he was induced to join in an exploration of Nebraska Territory, with Fielding B.
