Anthony Hawtrey
Anthony John Hawtrey (22 January 1909 – 18 October 1954) was an English actor and stage director. He began his acting career in 1930 and began directing by 1939. As director of the Embassy Theatre in London, his productions sometimes achieved enough success to transfer to the West End. During his theatre career, Hawtrey also acted in television and on film. He was a member of the Terry family of actors. Life and career Hawtrey was born in Claygate, Surrey, the illegitimate son of the actors Sir Charles Hawtrey and Olive Morris (the daughter of Florence Terry), and was educated at Bradfield College prior to studying for the stage under Bertha Moore. From 1930 Hawtrey worked as an actor in London, on tour in South Africa, and with the Liverpool Repertory Company. Edward Craven Hawtrey
Edward Craven Hawtrey (7 May 178927 January 1862) was an English educationalist, headmaster and later provost of Eton College. Life He was born at Burnham, Bucks, the son of the vicar of the parish. He was educated at Eton College and King's College, Cambridge, and in 1814 was appointed assistant master at Eton under John Keate. In 1834 he became headmaster of Eton, which role he performed until 1853, when he was elected Provost of Eton following the death of Francis Hodgson. While he was headmaster and Hodgson was Provost, new buildings were erected, including the school library and the sanatorium, the college chapel was restored, the Old Christopher Inn was closed, and the custom of Montem, the collection by street begging of funds for the university expenses of the captain of the school, was suppressed. George Procter Hawtrey
George Procter Hawtrey (1847–1910) was a British actor, playwright and pageantmaster, and former schoolmaster. Early life and education Hawtrey was son of Reverend John William Hawtrey, headmaster of the Alden House School at Slough. Hawtrey's two brothers, William and Charles, were also actors. He was educated at Eton College and Pembroke College, Oxford. A cousin was the economist Alfred Marshall. Academia Having been assistant master at the school founded by his father, Hawtrey decided to leave teaching and follow his brother, Charles, onto the stage. Stage career Hawtrey did not make a notable success as an actor, raising his family in "straitened circumstances" which inspired his son, Ralph, to follow the more remunerative path of the civil service. Henry Courtenay Hawtrey (29 June 1882 – 16 November 1961) was a British track and field athlete, winner of run at the 1906 Summer Olympics. He was born in Southampton and died in Aldershot. John Hawtrey
John Purvis Hawtrey (19 July 1850 – 17 August 1925) was an English amateur footballer who earned two caps for the national team in 1881 playing as a goalkeeper. Career His football career started with Remnants F.C. and he later played for Old Etonians, with whom he won the FA Cup in 1879. Katharine Mary Craven Clark ( Hawtrey, November 8, 1926 – June 11, 2021) was a Canadian actress. Hawtrey was born on November 8, 1926 and educated at Toronto's Trinity College. She began her career at Hart House Theatre and then went to England for a year's engagement with the Embassy Theatre in London. On her return, Hawtrey appeared in television plays for the CBC, before marrying English actor John Clark in 1956. They moved to New York City in 1959, where they had a son in 1963, naming him Jonathan Hawtrey Clark. They divorced in 1967 and she returned to Toronto with their son, appearing in many film and television productions. She is best remembered for her appearance in the 1980 film ''Funeral Home''. Sir Ralph George Hawtrey (22 November 1879, Slough – 21 March 1975, London) was a British economist, and a close friend of John Maynard Keynes. He was a member of the Cambridge Apostles, the University of Cambridge intellectual secret society. He took a monetary approach towards the economic ups and downs of industry and commerce, advocating changes in the money supply through adjustment in the bank rate of interest, foreshadowing the later work of Keynes. In the 1920s, he advocated what was later called the Treasury View. He also advanced in 1931 the concept that became known as the multiplier, a coefficient showing the effect of a change in total national investment on the amount of total national income. It was his view that the botched attempt to restore the international gold standard led to the Great Depression.
