Sir Donald Hawley (22 May 1921 – 31 January 2008) was a British colonial lawyer, diplomat and writer. Career Donald Frederick Hawley was educated at Radley College. At the outbreak of World War II, about to go to university, he volunteered for the Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry but was told to continue to university: he went to New College, Oxford where he took a four-term wartime degree in law. In 1941, he joined the Royal Artillery "without Army pay and allowances whilst specially employed" because he was with Sudanese troops in North Africa. In 1944, he joined the Sudan Political Service, then the Sudan Judiciary in 1947. In 1951, he was formally called to the bar in England. He continued as Chief Registrar of the Sudan Judiciary and Registrar-General of Marriages until 1955 when he resigned from the Sudan service and joined the British Diplomatic Service. Gideon Hawley (1727–1807) was a missionary to the Iroquois Indians in Massachusetts and on the Susquehanna River in New York. Biography He was born in the Stratfield section of Stratford, now Bridgeport, Connecticut, in New England on November 5, 1727. The son of Gideon Hawley and Hannah Bennett who was the daughter of Lieutenant James Bennett. Hawley's mother died at his birth and his father died three years later. He was the grandson of Ephraim and Sarah (Welles) Hawley from Trumbull. He was the great grandson of Joseph Hawley (Captain), first of the Hawley name to come to America in 1629, and was twice great grandson of Thomas Welles Governor of the Colony of Connecticut. He married Lucy Fessenden, second daughter of Reverend Benjamin Fessenden (Harvard 1718) and Rebecca (Smith) Fessenden, of Sandwich. They had three sons and two daughters. Frank Hawley (19 July 1877 – 23 August 1913) was an English cricketer. Hawley's batting style is unknown, though it is known he bowled fast-medium. It is not known with which arm he bowled. He was born at New Radford, Nottinghamshire. Hawley made a single first-class appearance for Nottinghamshire against Yorkshire at Trent Bridge in the 1897 County Championship. He bowled 14 wicketless overs in Yorkshire's first-innings, while in Nottinghamshire's first-innings he was dismissed for a single run by Bobby Peel. He won seven National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Top Fuel Funny Car and two Top Fuel Dragster national events during his 10-year drag racing career that included the 1982 and 1983 NHRA Funny Car World Championship.
