Hawkinsville was a community in Matagorda County, Texas, United States. In 2018, there were a few homes nearby, several businesses one mile to the south, and the name appeared on maps, but one source refers to the place in the past tense, while a second source states that the town disappeared in the 1950s. The town site is between Cedar Lane and Sargent. Geography Hawkinsville is located in southeast Matagorda County, southeast of Van Vleck. The historic site of Hawkinsville is on FM 457 north of its intersection with FM 2611. A bend of Caney Creek comes near FM 457 at the location. A single home can be seen near the historic location. Sargent is a small unincorporated community located in the eastern corner of Matagorda County, Texas, United States. Sargent is a fishing, boating, and water sports community with a variable population, as most of its inhabitants are weekend commuters from larger cities such as Houston, Austin, and San Antonio. Sargent is on Farm Road 457, five miles northwest of the Gulf of Mexico and twenty-four miles southeast of Bay City in the eastern corner of Matagorda County. Caney Creek (Matagorda Bay) is a river in Texas that begins northwest of Wharton, flows generally southeast, and empties into the Gulf of Mexico near Sargent. The major waterway to the west is the Colorado River while the next major waterway to the east is the San Bernard River. James Boyd Hawkins
Colonel James Boyd Hawkins (1813–1896) was an American planter and rancher. He moved from North Carolina to Texas in the 1840s, and he established the Hawkins Ranch, a working sugarcane plantation, operated by 101 enslaved African Americans by 1860. After the American Civil War, he replaced the slaves with paid laborers and convicts, and gradually turned his landholdings into a cattle ranch. Early life James Boyd Hawkins was born on December 27, 1813, in Franklin County, North Carolina. The Hawkins Ranch, also known as Hawkins Plantation, is a historic site and currently a cattle ranch, located in Matagorda County, Texas. It was established in 1846, as a working sugarcane plantation with enslaved African Americans. After the American Civil War ended in 1865, the site employed paid laborers and former convicts, and by c. 1890 it become a cattle ranch.
