Hawick RFC
Hawick Rugby Football Club is an semi-pro rugby union side, currently playing in the Scottish Premiership and Border League. The club was founded in 1885 and are based at Mansfield Park at Hawick in the Scottish Borders. Splinter from Hawick and Wilton RFC The premier club of Hawick was Hawick and Wilton RFC. This was formed by the Hawick and Wilton Cricket Club members as a sport to play in the winter. It ran the Hawick and Wilton Sevens; the fourth oldest rugby sevens tournament in the world (behind Melrose 883 Gala pril 1884and Selkirk Cricket Club ay 1884. For the members of Hawick and Wilton RFC however cricket came first and this led to the splinter club of Hawick RFC forming in 1885. Hawick and Wilton RFC continued on after Hawick RFC formed as rivals; and for a time both the Hawick and Wilton Sevens and the later Hawick Sevens co-existed. Scottish Rugby Union
The Scottish Rugby Union (SRU; gd, Aonadh Rugbaidh na h-Alba) is the governing body of rugby union in Scotland. Styled as Scottish Rugby, it is the second oldest Rugby Union, having been founded in 1873. The SRU oversees the national league system, known as the Scottish League Championship, and the Scottish National teams. The SRU is headed by the President ( Ian Barr) and Chairman (Colin Grassie), with Mark Dodson acting as the Chief Executive Officer. George Stevenson (rugby Union)
George Stevenson (30 May 1933 – 24 June 2012) was a Scotland international rugby union player. He played as a Centre, but could also cover Wing. Rugby Union career Amateur career Stevenson started playing rugby union with Hawick PSA and then moved to Hawick Linden. From Linden, Stevenson then played for Hawick. His Hawick team-mate Hugh McLeod said this of Stevenson: "He was a like car. He had gears and he would move into top gear when he thought it was necessary. He was never happy touching the ball down in the corner. He would always want to touch down under the posts. He was such a character." Provincial career He played for South of Scotland District. He also played for the combined Scottish Districts side, notably in their 1965 match against the touring South Africa international side. Peebles Sevens
Peebles Sevens is an annual rugby sevens event held by Peebles RFC, in Peebles, Scotland. This was one of a group of Sevens tournaments instated after the First World War extending the original Borders Spring Circuit. The Peebles Sevens began in 1923. Due to a calendar change in 2016; the tournament was moved from end-of-season to start-of-season. Hence 2016 shows two winners:- one for 2015–16 season and one for 2016–17 season. Subsequent tournaments were held as start of season Sevens. The 2018 winner (for season 2018–19) is Melrose. The Peebles Sevens is part of the Kings of the Sevens championship run by the Border League. This event was one of the first Sevens tournaments in the Borders to run with a 12-person squad in 2018–19 season, as opposed to a 10-person squad. It also featured rolling substitutions. Jed-Forest Sevens is an annual rugby sevens event held by Jed-Forest RFC, in Jedburgh, Scotland. The Jed-Forest Sevens was the fourth of the Border Sevens tournaments to be instated, in 1894, after the Melrose Sevens (1883), Gala Sevens (1884) and the Hawick Sevens (1885). The Jed-Forest Sevens are traditionally the last tournament of the Kings of the Sevens competition. 2022's Jed-Forest Sevens will be played on 14 May. Gala Sevens
Gala Sevens is an annual rugby sevens event held by Gala RFC, in Galashiels, Scotland. The Gala Sevens was the second of the Border Sevens tournaments to be instated in 1884, just behind the Melrose Sevens in 1883. Held around the start of every April, the tournament is part of the Kings of the Sevens competition. 2019's Gala Sevens took place on the 6 April. It was won by Edinburgh Academicals. Sports Day Gala introduced a Sports Day in 1884. This contained rugby sevens, a kicking competition and athletics. Memorial Football trophy The winner of the Gala Sevens receives the Border Memorial Football Trophy. Invited Sides Various sides have been invited to play in the Gala Sevens tournament throughout the years. The Barbarians entered in a side in 1976, as did Harlequins. Hawick Sevens is an annual rugby sevens event held by Hawick RFC, in Hawick, Scotland. The Hawick Sevens tournament started in 1886 and is the third extant oldest Sevens tournament in the world; behind Melrose Sevens (1883) and Gala Sevens (1884). Usually held around the end of every April, the tournament is part of the Kings of the Sevens competition. 2019's Hawick Sevens took place on the 20 April. The final was won by Boroughmuir. For the 2019–20 season the tournament will instead move to an August fixture. This was played on 10 August 2019. No tournament was held for 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The 2021–22 season event was won by Melrose. The disassociated Hawick & Wilton Sevens started in 1885. These were run by Hawick and Wilton RFC - a cricket club that branched out to rugby union and was the progenitor of the Hawick RFC club - on separate dates from the Hawick Sevens tournament. Melrose Sevens
Melrose Sevens is an annual rugby sevens event held by Melrose Rugby Club, at The Greenyards in Melrose, Scotland. It is the oldest rugby sevens competition in the world, dating back to 1883 when the tournament was suggested by former Melrose player Ned Haig. English side London Scottish are the current champions after beating Edinburgh Accies 29–12 in the 2019 final to win the event for the first time since 1965. History Held every April, the tournament is part of the Kings of the Sevens competition, and has attracted teams from as far afield as Japan, Hong Kong, Uruguay and South Africa. From 2018 the playing time in the final was cut from twenty minutes to fourteen minutes which is in line with the standard match time. In September 2019 the organisers had set out plans for the Melrose Sevens to relaunch as a four-day festival of music and rugby. Langholm Sevens
Langholm Sevens is an annual rugby sevens event held by Langholm RFC, in Langholm, Scotland. The Langholm Sevens was the last of the Border Sevens tournaments to be instated in 1908. Held around the end of every April, the tournament is part of the Kings of the Sevens competition. 2019's Langholm Sevens took place on 27 April. Sports Day Langholm first introduced a Sports Day - as it was originally called - on 16 October 1886; and rugby union seven a sides were played then. Two local teams met; from the firms of James Scott and Sons of Waverley Mills and Hotson the Builders. James Scott and Sons won the match. However it wasn't until 1908 that Langholm RFC decided that they should hold an annual Sports Day and thus the Sevens tournament today dates from then. Scottish Cup (rugby Union)
The Scottish Cup is the annual knock-out cup competition for domestic rugby union clubs in Scotland. The cup has been competed for since the 1995-1996 season. The competition was in abeyance between 2019 and 2022, initially due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and made its return in the 2022-23 season. Despite many structural changes the competition has always culminated with the final at Murrayfield Stadium. Format Clubs in the three National Leagues compete in the first round, with six Premiership sides added in the second round, and the final four Premiership teams added in the third round of the competition. As part of the Scottish Cup Finals day, the finals of the Shield and Bowl competitions are also held. The Scottish National League Division One (known as Tennent's National League Division 1 for sponsorship reasons) is the second tier of the Scottish League Championship for amateur rugby union clubs in Scotland. The division was established in its current format in 2014, with the creation of three national leagues below the Premiership. Dundee HSFP is a former rugby union team that played their home games at the Mayfield Playing Fields, Dundee, Scotland. The club disbanded in 2021. The team was founded in 1880 by former pupils of the High School of Dundee. Scottish Premiership (rugby Union)
The Scottish Premiership (referred to as the Tennents Premiership for sponsorship reasons) is an amateur league competition for Scottish rugby union clubs. First held in 1973, it is the top division of the Scottish League Championship. The most recent (2019) champions are Ayr, while the most successful club is Hawick, who have won the competition twelve times. Ten clubs contest the league, with the bottom club relegated to the Scottish National League Division One and second-bottom club involved in a play-off. The top level of club rugby in Scotland are the two professional teams – Glasgow Warriors and Edinburgh Rugby – that play in the United Rugby Championship. They assign their players to the clubs below in a Pro-Draft; so that they can still play when not used by the professional sides.
