Havre de Grace Historic District is a national Historic district (United States), historic district at Havre de Grace, Maryland, Havre de Grace, Harford County, Maryland, Harford County, Maryland, United States. It is an urban district of approximately a thousand buildings and includes the central business district and most of the residential neighborhoods radiating out of it. The buildings date primarily from the 19th and early 20th centuries. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. Havre de Grace (), abbreviated HdG, is a city in Harford County, Maryland, Harford County, Maryland. It is situated at the mouth of the Susquehanna River and the head of Chesapeake Bay. It is named after the port city of Le Havre, France, which in full was once ''Le Havre de Grâce'' (French language, French, "Harbor of Grace"). The population was 12,952 at the 2010 United States census, 2010 U.S. census. In 2014, Smithsonian (magazine), ''Smithsonian'' magazine called it one of the 20 best small U.S. towns to visit. History Early history During the American Revolutionary War, Revolutionary War, the small hamlet known as Harmer's Town was visited several times by General Gilbert du Motier, marquis de La Fayette, Lafayette, who became considered a hero of the war.
