Gilbert Haven (September 19, 1821 – January 3, 1880) was a bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, elected in 1872. He was consecrated a bishop on May 24, 1872 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York. He was an early benefactor of Clark College (now Clark Atlanta University), visualizing it as a university of all the Methodist schools founded for the education of freedmen (former African American slaves). He succeeded Bishop Davis Wasgatt Clark (for whom Clark College was named) as the President of the Freedman's Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Jens Haven (June 23, 1724 – April 16, 1796) was a Danish-Canadian Moravian missionary and the prime mover behind the founding of the Moravian missions in Labrador. Biography Jens Haven was born at Sønderhaven in Vust parish, Jammerbugt, Denmark. His family were Lutheran, but after being apprenticed to a Moravian joiner, he joined the Moravian community at Herrnhut in eastern Saxony, Germany. In 1758, he went with his brother Peter and Matthäus Stach to the missions in Greenland among the Inuit, remaining there four years and helping to found the settlement of Lichtenfels. Haven had long wished to go to Labrador, and was not deterred by the prior murder by natives of Labrador of six missionaries, led by Johann Christian Erhardt (1718—1752). Nathaniel Appleton Haven (July 19, 1762 – March 13, 1831) was an American politician, a physician, and served as a U.S. Representative from New Hampshire. Early life Haven was born in Portsmouth in the Province of New Hampshire. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy, where he graduated in 1807 with distinctions. He then pursued classical studies, was educated by the Reverend Dr. Nathaniel Appleton, and graduated in medicine from Harvard College in 1779. Career Haven practiced his profession in Portsmouth and also engaged in mercantile pursuits, and was editor of the Portsmouth Journal until 1825. Serving as a ship's surgeon in the latter part of the Revolutionary War, Haven was captured by the British and was a prisoner of war aboard the Jersey prison ship at New York for a short time. Samuel Forster Haven (May 28, 1806 – September 5, 1881) was an American archeologist and anthropologist. Haven was born to Judge Samuel and Betsy Haven in Dedham, Massachusetts. He took a degree from Amherst College, then studied law at Harvard Law School, and then commenced a legal practice in Dedham and Lowell, Massachusetts. Haven had a keen interest in the history of New England before the Revolution, and began publishing papers in 1836. His interest then turned towards the archeology of the Americas. In September 1837 he was appointed librarian of the American Antiquarian Society, located in Worcester, Massachusetts. He began his duties as librarian in April 1838, and in October of that same year, he was elected a member of the society. Haven became one of the society's longest serving librarians from 1838 to 1881, and also served on its board of councilors from 1855 to 1881. Samuel Haven (April 5, 1771 – September 4, 1847) was an American judge. Personal life Haven was the son of Jason Haven and the grandson of Samuel Dexter through his daughter, Catherine. He was born April 5, 1771, in Dedham. On March 6, 1799, he married Elizabeth Cragie in Dedham. He attended Harvard College as a member of the class of 1789 and then studied law with Fisher Ames and Samuel Dexter. Haven was the father of Samuel Foster Haven. He died in Roxbury on September 4, 1847, at the home of his daughter, Catharine Dexter Haven Hilliard. Later in life he would become a member of the Swedenborgian Church. Jason Haven (March 2, 1733 – May 17, 1803) was the longest serving minister of the First Church and Parish in Dedham. Personal life Haven was born on March 2, 1733, in Framingham, Massachusetts. He was graduated from Harvard College in 1754. While at Harvard, he was a classmate of John Hancock and one year ahead of John Adams. Following a fever in 1774, for which a day of fasting and prayer was called, he remain "an invalid" for the rest of his life. He married the oldest daughter, Catherine, of his predecessor in the Dedham Church, Samuel Dexter (minister), Samuel Dexter. He also had a son, Samuel Haven (judge), Samuel.
