''Have Not Been the Same: The Can-Rock Renaissance 1985–1995'' is a book by Canadian music journalists Michael Barclay, Ian A.D. Jack, and Jason Schneider, which chronicles the development of alternative rock in Canada between 1985 and 1995. Published by ECW Press, the book has appeared in two editions, an original in 2001 () and an updated tenth anniversary edition in 2011 (). In conjunction with the 2011 edition of the book, two compilation albums of music from the era chronicled by the book were also released as fundraisers for charitable organizations. The book is named for a 1985 single by Slow, a Vancouver-based punk rock band. Content The book includes chapters devoted specifically to the roles of Blue Rodeo, The Tragically Hip, Sloan, Daniel Lanois and Nettwerk Records, as well as other chapters which take a thematic approach to profile a number of artists related by either geography or genre. Much (an abbreviation for its full name MuchMusic) is a Canadian English language specialty channel owned by BCE Inc. through its Bell Media subsidiary that airs programming aimed at teenagers and young adults. MuchMusic launched on August 31, 1984, under the ownership of CHUM Limited, and was originally focused on music programming, including blocks of music videos and original series focusing on Canadian musicians. Skydiggers
Skydiggers are a Canadian roots rock band from Toronto formed by Andy Maize and Josh Finlayson. Since 1990, they have released 19 albums/EPs and have had a number of singles that have appeared on the Canadian charts. Their most successful album is ''Restless'', released in 1992. With a presence spanning decades, the band has appeared under a variety of different record labels and with many changes in members that form the group. Bry Webb
Bryan Webb (born 1977), sometimes credited as Bry Webb, is a Canadian singer and songwriter, best known as the lead vocalist for the indie rock band Constantines. History Webb began his musical career playing in the emo band Shoulder in 1994, releasing a demo tape, a CD/LP and two 7" vinyl before breaking up in 1997. Two years after Shoulder's breakup, in 1999, Webb and two other former members of the band formed Constantines. In 2007 he recorded a cover of The Velvet Underground's "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'" as a duet with Casey Mecija of Ohbijou for the compilation album, '' Friends in Bellwoods''. In 2009, Webb received a Genie Award nomination in the category Best Achievement in Music – Original Song for "Big Smoke", a song he wrote for the soundtrack to ''This Beautiful City''. The Nils
The Nils are a Montreal punk rock band formed in 1978 by Alex Soria. The Nils first gained local notoriety upon the 1982 release of a five-song demo entitled ''Now''. Their self-titled debut album was released to critical acclaim in 1987, and earned praise from Rolling Stone and contemporary punk rock bands, including Hüsker Dü. The Nils disbanded and reformed on various occasions in the 1990s and early 2000s, until the death of Alex Soria in 2004. In 2010 Carlos Soria reformed the band, and in 2015 The Nils released ''Shadows and Ghosts'', their first album of new material in over 25 years. Jim Bryson
Jim Bryson is a Canadian singer-songwriter. Briefly a founding member of the band Punchbuggy, he moved to a musical life under his own name with the release of his debut album, ''The Occasionals'', in 2000. A member of singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards's touring band, Bryson has also toured and recorded with many other artists, including Howe Gelb, Lynn Miles, Sarah Harmer, The Weakerthans, Hilotrons and The Tragically Hip. Bryson has toured Canada and the United Kingdom extensively. He has played the South by Southwest festival and his music has been in rotation on CBC Radio 3. The Grapes of Wrath are a platinum-selling Canadian rock band. Formed in 1983, they enjoyed their greatest commercial success in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Great Lake Swimmers is a Canadian folk rock band from Wainfleet, Ontario, and currently based in Toronto. Corb Lund is a Canadian country and western singer-songwriter from Taber, Alberta, Canada. He has released eleven albums, three of which are certified gold. Lund tours regularly in Canada, the United States and Australia, and has received several awards in Canada and abroad. Biography Corb Lund grew up in Southern Alberta living on his family's farm and ranches near Taber, Cardston and Rosemary. Men Without Hats are a Canadian New wave music, new wave and synth-pop band, originally from Montreal, Quebec. The Burning Hell (band)
The Burning Hell is a band fronted by songwriter Mathias Kom and multi-instrumentalist Ariel Sharratt, particularly known for their literate songwriting, DIY ethos, and dynamic live performances. The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH, pronounced , french: Centre de toxicomanie et de santé mentale) is a psychiatric teaching hospital located in Toronto and ten community locations throughout the province of Ontario, Canada.
