Havana Biennial
The Bienal de La Habana was founded in 1984. It takes place in Havana (Cuba) every two years. It principally aims at promoting the developing world in contemporary art circles, giving priority to Latin American and Caribbean artists, although artists from all over the world submit works. Since its first edition in 1984, the Biennial event has had central themes, among them tradition and contemporary times, challenges, art, society and reflection, man and memory, life with art and urban life. Works emphasize mainly paintings and other two-dimensional displays, using a variety of techniques. Carlos Capelán
Carlos Capelán ( Montevideo, Uruguay, 1948) is a contemporary artist. Career Although his conceptual work includes drawings and paintings, his installations are more widely known for their atmospherical impact, constituting an environment in which the viewer is free to wander around and experience notions of displacement. In 1995, Capelán received the Guggenheim Fellowship. In 1973, Capelán moved to Lund, Sweden. Capelán studied at Grafikskolan Forum in Malmö, Sweden. Capelán currently resides in Moravia, Costa Rica. Francis Alÿs
Francis Alÿs (born 1959, Antwerp) is a Belgian-born, Mexico-based artist. His work emerges in the interdisciplinary space of art, architecture, and social practice. In 1986, Alÿs left behind his profession as an architect and relocated to Mexico City. He has created a diverse body of artwork and performance art that explores urban tensions and geopolitics. Employing a broad range of media, from painting to performance, his works examine the tension between politics and poetics, individual action and impotence. Alÿs commonly enacts ''paseos''—walks that resist the subjection of common space. Marta Palau Bosch
Marta Palau Bosch (17 July 1934 – 13 August 2022) was a Spanish-Mexican artist who resided in Mexico. She worked in engraving, painting, sculpture, and most prominently in tapestries, defining herself by her profound artistic use and arrangement of native Mexican natural materials. She was one of the first Mexican artists to focus on themes around women's and immigrants' experiences during the 1970s, especially in her Ilerda series of tapestries and later with her Nahual sculptures. Early life Marta Palau Bosch was born on 17 July 1934 in Albesa, Spain. As her parents were exiled during the era of Francoist Spain, the family moved to Mexico in 1940. From 1955 to 1965 she studied at " La Esmeralda", the school of painting and sculpture for the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes (INBA) in Mexico City. António Ole
António Ole (born 1951) is a multi-medium Angolan artist, among the best known in the country. He represented Angola at the 2017 Venice Biennale. Ole's works, which often center around representing contemporary issues in Angolan society, have received international acclaim for their incorporation of found materials, painting technique, and unique interpretations of recent Post-Colonial history. Ole's first international exhibition was in 1984 at the Los Angeles Museum of African American Art. He has also shown work at the Havana Biennial and Johannesburg Biennial. Ole participated in the African delegation to the 1992 International Exhibition of Seville. In addition to painting and other visual mediums, Ole also works in photography and videography. Manuel Mendive
Manuel Mendive Hoyos (born 1944) is one of the leading Afro-Cuban artists to emerge from the revolutionary period, and is considered by many to be the most important Cuban artist living today. Biography Mendive was born in Havana, Cuba, in 1944. His family practiced La Regla de Ocha, or Santería. A mulatto, he cherishes his Yoruba roots from the West coast of Africa. In 1963, he graduated from the San Alejandro Academy of Plastic Arts, Havana. Awards He has received numerous awards for his art within exhibitions in Cuba and in Europe. Lani Maestro
Lani Maestro (born 1957) is a Filipino-Canadian artist who divides her time between France and Canada. She works in installation, sound, video, bookworks and writing. From 1990-94 Maestro was co-founder/co-publisher and designer of HARBOUR Magazine of Art and Everyday Life, a journal of artworks and writings by artists, writers and theorists based in Montreal. Early life and education Maestro was born in Manila and studied at the University of the Philippines where she received a BFA. She pursued an MFA at NSCAD University in Halifax. She taught studio arts at the Nova Scotia College Of Art and Design (now known as NSCAD University). University of Lethbridge. For ten years, she taught in the MFA program at Concordia University.
