Hatfield Marine Science Center
The Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) is a marine science research and education center next to Yaquina Bay of the Pacific Ocean in the U.S. state of Oregon. It is operated by Oregon State University in cooperation with five state and federal agencies co-located on site. Named after Mark Hatfield, a former U.S. Senate, U.S. Senator from Oregon, the HMSC occupies a site in Newport, Oregon, Newport. History The Hatfield Marine Science Center was opened in 1965. The center was preceded by the Yaquina Bay Fisheries Laboratory, which was established in 1939 on the opposite side of Yaquina Bay. After several years of development, the Gladys Valley Marine Studies Building (MSB) was completed in summer 2020. The building hosts new office and laboratory space, a 250-seat auditorium and a cafe. Yaquina Bay
Yaquina Bay ( ) is a coastal Estuary, estuarine community found in Newport, Oregon. Yaquina Bay is a semi-enclosed body of water, approximately 8 km2 (3.2 mi2) in area, with free connection to the Pacific Ocean, but also diluted with freshwater from the Yaquina River land drainage. The Bay is traversed by the Yaquina Bay Bridge. Two small cities border the Yaquina River and Bay: Newport (population approx. 9,989), and Toledo, Oregon, Toledo (population approx. 3,459). The Yaquina Bay in Newport is a popular tourist destination along the Pacific Coast Highway. It is also an important estuary for the area's ecology and economy. RV ''Oceanus'' is a Regional-class research vessel owned by the National Science Foundation, based in Newport, Oregon, and maintained and operated by Oregon State University. The ship was originally delivered to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) for operation as a part of the U.S. Academic Research Fleet as a University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) designated operator. in November 1975. NOAA Ship ''Rainier'' (S 221) is a survey vessel in commission with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Her primary mission is to chart all aspects of the ocean and sea floor, primarily in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. The ship is home-ported at the NOAA Marine Operations Center–Pacific in Newport, Oregon. Construction and characteristics ''Rainier'' was designed as a "medium survey ship" (MSS) by the U.S. Maritime Administration.
