Harvest Caye
Harvest Caye is a private island owned by Norwegian Cruise Line, located in southern Belize. The caye features wildlife exhibitions including a blue morpho butterfly house. On May 23, 2017, personnel from Harvest Caye, accompanied by Edgar Correa of the Belize Forestry Department, removed a juvenile Scarlet Macaw from Belize Bird Rescue to add to Harvest Caye's wildlife exhibits. Belize Bird Rescue, a non-profit organization dedicated to rehabilitating and releasing rescued wildlife, strongly objected to this action, arguing that the bird was healthy and a good release candidate and should not be kept permanently in captivity. The confiscation was also condemned by the Belize Audubon Society and has become a significant controversy for the resort. The Menelaus blue morpho (''Morpho menelaus'') is one of thirty species of butterfly in the subfamily Morphinae. Its wingspan is approximately , and its dorsal forewings and hindwings are a bright, iridescent blue edged with black, while the ventral surfaces are brown. Scarlet Macaw
The scarlet macaw (''Ara macao'') is a large red, yellow, and blue Central and South American parrot, a member of a large group of Neotropical parrots called macaws. It is native to humid evergreen forests of the Neotropics. Its range extends from south-eastern Mexico to Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia, Venezuela and Brazil in lowlands of (at least formerly) up to , the Caribbean island of Trinidad, as well as the Pacific island of Coiba. Belize Bird Rescue
Belize Bird Rescue (BBR) is an avian rescue and rehabilitation centre in Belize. It is a non-governmental and non-profit organization, and is Belize's only multi-species avian rescue and rehabilitation centre. It operates wholly within Belize under license and support from the Government of Belize Forest Department. The main focus of the organisation is the rehabilitation for release of wild-caught psittacines (parrots) liberated from the illegal local pet trade. As of July 2017, Belize Bird Rescue has returned more than 450 ex-captive parrots to the wild. The Belize Audubon Society is a conservation group in Belize, formed in 1969. Like similar societies elsewhere, it is named in honor of ornithologist and naturalist John James Audubon. CocoCay or Little Stirrup Cay is one of the Berry Islands, a collection of Bahamian cays and small islands located approximately 55 miles north of Nassau. It is located near Great Abaco Island and was formerly known as Gorda Cay.
