Harun Karadeniz
Harun Karadeniz (1942, in Armutlu, Alucra – 15 August 1975, in Istanbul) was a Turkish political activist and author. He was the student leader of the late 1960s generation in Turkey and the chair of the Student Union of Istanbul Technical University. Together with other prominent student leaders such as Deniz Gezmiş, he was one of the student leaders who organized the famous 1968 protest against the American Navy's Sixth Fleet arriving at the Port of Istanbul, although he was initially against protesting at the docks themselves. Karadeniz suffered cancer when he was in detention after the 1971 military coup in Turkey. He was not allowed medical treatment during his imprisonment, which eventually led to the spread of the cancer. Despite medical treatment in London, he died at age 33. Alucra
Alucra is a town and a district of Giresun Province in the Black Sea region of Turkey, from the city of Giresun. It was a district of Şebinkarahisar province between 1924-1933. Etymology Alucra is a modification of the Ottoman Empire name ''El Ücra'' meaning ''far-off' or ''remote''. Geography Alucra is an inland district, high in the Giresun Mountains, in the upper reaches of the Kelkit River. The weather on the Black Sea coast is typically wet and humid but Alucra is high inland therefore much cooler in winter, when it snows, and then dry and hot in summer. The snow melts in March and April and the spring rains last until June, during these months the rivers are full. The countryside is high mountain and pasture, with fir tree cover on the north-facing mountainsides and bare southern faces. Deniz Gezmiş (27 February 1947 – 6 May 1972) was a Turkish Marxist-Leninist revolutionary, student leader, and political activist in Turkey in the late 1960s. He was one of the founding members of the People's Liberation Army of Turkey (THKO). Ethnically Kurdish, he was born to an inspector of primary education and syndicalist Cemil Gezmiş and a primary school teacher Mukaddes Gezmiş. He was educated in various Turkish cities. He spent most of his childhood in Sivas, where his father grew up. He graduated from high school in Istanbul where he first encountered left wing ideas. The 1971 Turkish military memorandum ( tr, 12 Mart Muhtırası), issued on 12 March that year, was the second military intervention to take place in the Republic of Turkey, coming 11 years after its 1960 predecessor. It is known as the "coup by memorandum", which the military delivered in lieu of sending out tanks, as it had done previously.
