Jatiya Party (Ershad)
The Jatiya Party ( bn, জাতীয় পার্টি, translit=Jatiyo Party, lit=National Party) is a conservative, nationalist political party in Bangladesh and is currently the main opposition in the Jatiya Sangsad, against the Awami League. The current chairman of the party is Ghulam Muhammad Quader. On 3 January 2019, the party announced its decision to join the Bangladesh Awami League-led Grand Alliance after having been in opposition for the previous parliamentary term. However, the party backtracked the next day and announced that it intended to remain part of the opposition. Currently, it holds Rangpur out of Bangladesh's 12 city corporations. Abdullah Al Noman is a Bangladeshi politician who is a vice-chairman of Bangladesh Nationalist Party. He is a 3-term Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Chittagong-9 constituency. He served as a minister of fisheries and food at the Second Khaleda Cabinet. Career Noman was elected to Parliament from Kotwali, Chittagong-9 in 1991. On 19 August 1998, the Bureau of Anti-Corruption Commission sued Noman for failure to submit a wealth statement with Dhanmondi Police Station. The charge sheet was submitted on 30 May 2000. Chittagong-9 is a constituency represented in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) of Bangladesh since 2018 by Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury of the Awami League. Boundaries The constituency encompasses Chittagong City Corporation wards 15 through 23 and 31 through 35. History The constituency was created for the first general elections in newly independent Bangladesh, held in 1973. Ahead of the 2008 general election, the Election Commission redrew constituency boundaries to reflect population changes revealed by the 2001 Bangladesh census. The 2008 reapportionment added one seat to Chittagong City and altered the boundaries of the three other seats in the city, including this one. Chittagong District, renamed the Chattogram District, is a district located in the south-eastern region of Bangladesh. It is a part of the Chattogram Division. The port city of Chattogram, which is the second largest city in Bangladesh, is located within this district. History Because of the natural harbour, Chattogram had been an important location for trade, drawing Arab traders as early as the 9th century CE. The region fell under the rule of kings from Arakan in the 16th and 17th centuries, but later, the Mughal Army under Shaista Khan conquered Chattogram.
