The Hartford Audubon Society, founded in 1909, is nonprofit organization dedicated to wildlife conservation and education. Hartford Audubon manages several wildlife sanctuaries, participates in conservation advocacy, conducts bird censuses, and offers field trips, lectures, and other programming. John Hall Sage
John Hall Sage (April 20, 1847 — August 16, 1925) was an American banker and ornithologist who published scores of essays on the birds of Connecticut and other topics for the American Ornithologists' Union, which he served as secretary for twenty-eight years. Born in Portland, Connecticut, Sage was a lifelong resident of the state. He attended public schools in Bridgeport and Portland and clerked for Aetna following graduation from Bridgeport High School. He never attended college. In 1873, he became a teller at the First National Bank of Portland. He worked his way up to cashier in 1879, the same year he became treasurer of the Freestone Savings Bank of Portland, which he later served as president. Following the merger of these two banks in 1925, he became chairman of the board of directors of the Portland Trust Company. From 1878, Sage became a prolific writer and amateur ornithologist. The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) is a state agency in the US state of Connecticut. The department oversees the state's natural resources and environment and regulates public utilities and energy policy. It is headquartered in Hartford. The agency was created on July 1, 2011, by the merging of two other state agencies, the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection and the Connecticut Department of Public Utility Control. Ellington is a town in Tolland County, Connecticut, United States. Ellington was incorporated in May 1786, from East Windsor. As of the 2020 census, the town population was 16,426. History Originally the area in what is now Ellington was named by the natives as “Weexskashuck” which translates to “Great Marsh”. The earliest settlers called the area Great Marsh or Goshen.
