Harry J. Scott
Henry John Athelson Scott (23 July 1901 – 12 January 1978) was founding editor of the '' Dalesman'' magazine, in Yorkshire, northern England. He established the journal, originally called ''The Yorkshire Dalesman'', from the front room of his cottage in Clapham, North Yorkshire, in 1939. He remained editor, then managing director, of ''The Dalesman'' and sister magazine ''Cumbria'' until his death in 1978, aged 76. In the meantime ''The Dalesman'' grew to become Britain's best-selling regional magazine. Scott was also an early BBC royal correspondent. During the late 1930s he described a number of royal visits to the north of England for broadcast on the BBC's Northern Programme. Later in his career he wrote a number of books about his beloved Yorkshire and his business became a prolific publisher of books in the North of England. Early life and career Harry J. Dalesman
''Dalesman'' is a British monthly regional magazine, based in Skipton, and serving the English county of Yorkshire. Its first edition was published in March 1939, under the original title of ''The Yorkshire Dalesman: A Monthly Magazine of Dales' Life and Industry''. Although originally only serving the Yorkshire Dales, the magazine was soon expanded to cover the whole county of Yorkshire, with a particular focus on the countryside, and over the years it has become a northern institution. George VI
George VI (Albert Frederick Arthur George; 14 December 1895 – 6 February 1952) was King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Commonwealth from 11 December 1936 until Death and state funeral of George VI, his death in 1952. Grange-over-Sands
Grange-over-Sands is a town and civil parish located on the north side of Morecambe Bay in Cumbria, England, a few miles south of the Lake District National Park. In the 2001 census the parish had a population of 4,042, increasing at the 2011 census to 4,114. Historically part of Lancashire, the town was created as an urban district in 1894. Since the 1974 local government re-organisation, it has been of the South Lakeland district of Cumbria, though it remains part of the Duchy of Lancaster. Travelling by road, Grange-over-Sands is to the south of Kendal, to the east of Ulverston, to the east of Barrow-in-Furness and to the west of Lancaster. History The town developed in the Victorian era from a small fishing village and the arrival of the railway in 1857 made it a popular seaside resort on the north side of Morecambe Bay, across the sands from Morecambe. Arthur Raistrick
Arthur Raistrick (16 August 1896 – 9 April 1991) was a British geologist, archaeologist, academic, and writer. He was born in a working class home in Saltaire, Yorkshire. He was a scholar in many related, and some unrelated, fields. He published some 330 articles, books, pamphlets and scholarly treatises. Early life and work In his early life he was imprisoned as a conscientious objector to military service in the First World War. During his confines in Durham and Wormwood Scrubs prisons he began an association with, and later membership of, the Society of Friends, that lasted throughout his life. As well as a pacifist, he was a socialist and had close ties to the early Independent Labour Party, which he greatly valued into his old age. His interests ranged widely. His early academic life was spent at Armstrong and Kings Colleges, Newcastle part of Durham University (later to become Newcastle University) where he attained the role of Reader in Applied Geology.
