Harry Horlick (bandleader)
Harry Horlick (born Gila Gorlik; July 20, 1896 – July 1970)'' New York, State and Federal Naturalization Records, 1794–1943'' was an American violinist and bandleader best known for leading The A&P Gypsies, "the first commercially sponsored musical act on radio". Early years Horlick was born in Konotop, Ukraine, according to his sworn naturalization and draft registrations, while other sources list Kyiv or Cherinkow, "a little hamlet just outside of Moscow, Russia". His brother's lack of financial success as concertmaster of the Imperial Opera Company of Tiflis caused their father to oppose another son's being a professional musician. Undeterred, Horlick built a violin when was six years old and played during his father's absences. Eventually the brothers persuaded their father to let Horlick have formal training in music. World Broadcasting System
World Broadcasting System, Inc., was an American recording service for the radio industry founded in 1929 by Percy L. Deutsch (1885–1968), with key investors and creative artists (Walter) Gustave Haenschen and Milton Diamond (both of whom had worked with Deutsch at the Brunswick Record Company) and was originally based in New York. The company recorded and, through its subsidiary, World Program Service, distributed discs to radio stations for broadcast. The discs themselves were 16 inches in diameter, vertical-cut, recorded at 33 1/3 r.p.m., and would play for 15 minutes per side on average. These recordings, which were made especially for radio studios that could not afford to maintain a studio orchestra, were not sold to the public. In 1932, WBS built studios in Washington, D.C., for use by "members of Congress and other public officials" for distribution to their home radio stations. Thesaurus was an American syndication service that provided transcribed programs for use by radio stations. Origin The National Broadcasting Company of New York City launched the Thesaurus program service on July 15, 1935. It was the third such service in the United States after World Broadcasting System (the first) and Standard Radio Advertising Co., Inc. An advertisement in the June 15, 1935, issue of the trade publication ''Broadcasting'' described the service as "A Treasure House of Recorded Programs" and noted that Thesaurus would be demonstrated at the upcoming convention of the National Association of Broadcasters. An article in that same issue of ''Broadcasting'' reported: e initial plan is to offer to stations a library of approximately 400 units at the outset, including leading musical aggregations and soloists, along with dramatic skits, comedy teams and other diversified program arrangements. ''The A&P Gypsies'' is a musical series broadcast on radio beginning in 1924. With the opening theme of "Two Guitars," the host and band leader was Harry Horlick, who had learned gypsy folk music while traveling with gypsy bands in Istanbul. Background and history Born July 20, 1896, in Tiflis, Russia, Horlick remained in Russia when his family left for America at the beginning on World War I, and he became a prisoner of war. Decca Records is a British record label established in 1929 by Edward Lewis (Decca), Edward Lewis. Its U.S. label was established in late 1934 by Lewis, Jack Kapp, American Decca's first president, and Milton Rackmil, who later became American Decca's president.
