Harry Hamill (golfer)
Henry Clay Hamill (1879–1947) was a pioneer Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1900s, and a co-founder of Rugby League in Australia. Born to parents William and Isabella Hamill at Redfern, New South Wales in 1879, Harry Hamill was one of the original founders of the Newtown Jets rugby league football club in 1908 and was the club's first captain. Originally a rugby union player with Newtown, Harry Hamill captained the Newtown in their first season before retiring. As a founding member of Newtown and pioneer of the game of rugby league in Sydney, Harry Hamill was awarded Life Membership of the NSWRFL in 1914. Harry Hamill was a journalist during his working life and created the ''Rugby League News'' in 1920. This publication became what is now the Big League Magazine. Redfern is an inner-city suburb of Sydney located 3 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district and is part of the local government area of the City of Sydney. Strawberry Hills is a locality on the border with Surry Hills. The area experienced the process of gentrification and is subject to extensive redevelopment plans by the state government, to increase the population and reduce the concentration of poverty in the suburb and neighbouring Waterloo (see Redfern-Eveleigh-Darlington). Newtown Jets
The Newtown Jets are an Australian rugby league football club based in Newtown, a suburb of Sydney's inner west. They currently compete in the NSW Cup competition, having left the top grade after the 1983 NSWRFL season. The Jets' home ground is Henson Park, and their team colours are blue (traditionally royal blue) and white. Established in 1908, Newtown were one of the founding members of the New South Wales Rugby Football League. They competed continuously in the NSWRFL premiership until their departure in 1983, the first reduction in the League since 1937. Over this period they won the competition three times. ''Big League'' was the official magazine of the National Rugby League. Its predecessor, ''The Rugby League News'', was first published in 1920; in 1974 it was rebranded as ''Big League''. In 2020, due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia and the initial suspension of the 2020 NRL season, production of the magazine was suspended and has not resumed; leaving the game without an official program. The magazine served as a game-day program, containing team line-ups, stats and feature stories. It went on sale every Thursday at newsagents and exclusively at all active NRL grounds on weekends.
