Harry Griffiths (politician)
Harry Albert Craven Griffiths (sometimes Craven-Griffiths; 30 September 1866 – 23 March 1935) was an Australian politician who served as a Country Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1914 to 1921 and from 1924 until his death. Biography Griffiths was born in Manchester, England, to Eleanor Alice (née Cooke) and Henry Craven Griffiths. He came to Western Australia in 1897, during the gold rush, and lived in Kalgoorlie until 1907, when he moved to a property at Kellerberrin. Western Australian Legislative Assembly
The Western Australian Legislative Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of Western Australia, an Australian state. The Parliament sits in Parliament House in the Western Australian capital, Perth. The Legislative Assembly today has 59 members, elected for four-year terms from single-member electoral districts. Members are elected using the preferential voting system. As with all other Australian states and territories, voting is compulsory for all Australian citizens over the legal voting age of 18. Role and operation Most legislation in Western Australia is initiated in the Legislative Assembly. The party or coalition that can command a majority in the Legislative Assembly is invited by the Governor to form a government. Western Australian Farmers Federation
Western Australian Farmers Federation (WAFarmers) is an agricultural organisation in Western Australia. In the one hundred years of its existence, the various interactions with other groups, and the separation, then inclusion of political activity, has given the federation a colourful position in the history of Western Australia. History As early as 1890 some farming organisations had been formed in WA, with the Wheatgrowers' Association being formed in 1908. In March 1912 the Farmers and Settlers' Association was formed – in part as a response to a letter to WA farmers from the Rural Workers' Union of Australia discussing farm workers' wages – and merged with the Wheatgrowers' Association. The Farmers and Settlers' Association, together with the Producers' Union, formed the business Westralian Farmers Ltd (known later as Wesfarmers) in 1913. 1921 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 12 March 1921 to elect all 50 members to the Legislative Assembly. The incumbent government, led by Premier James Mitchell of the Nationalist Party and supported by the Country Party and National Labor Party, won a second term in government against the Labor Party opposition, led by Opposition Leader Philip Collier. At this election Edith Cowan became the first woman elected to any Australian parliament. Results : 164,688 electors were enrolled to vote at the election, but 6 of the 50 seats were uncontested, with 17,740 electors enrolled in those seats. Of these, 3 were held by Labor, 2 by the Country Party and 1 was held by the National Labor Party.
