Harry Gamboa, Jr.
Harry Gamboa Jr. (born 1951) is a Chicano essayist, photographer, director, and performance artist. He was a founding member of the influential Chicano performance art collective ASCO. Biography The first of five children born to a working-class Mexican-American couple, Gamboa grew up in East Los Angeles, California, "an urban area tormented by poverty, violence, and racial conflict". Despite the "inadequacy of the East L.A. public schools", Gamboa was encouraged to value education and did fairly well in school, and he was active in community organizations and politics as a teenager. As a high-school student (graduated 1969), Gamboa was active in student government and an organizer of various student-initiated reforms, most significantly the 1968 " East L.A. Blowouts"—a series of protests against the inferior conditions of public schools in poor, non-white areas. Barbara Carrasco
Barbara Carrasco (born 1955) is a Chicana artist and activist who lives and works in Los Angeles. She is considered to be a "radical feminist" whose work critiques dominant cultural stereotypes involving socioeconomics, race, gender and sexuality. Her art has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Her work was exhibited in the 1990-1993 traveling exhibition Chicano Art: Resistance and Affirmation. Biography Carrasco was born in El Paso, Texas to Mexican-American parents. With four siblings, she was the oldest girl and second oldest child, having two brothers and two sisters. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) is an art museum located on Wilshire Boulevard in the Miracle Mile, Los Angeles, California, Miracle Mile vicinity of Los Angeles. LACMA is on Museum Row, adjacent to the La Brea Tar Pits (George C. Page Museum). LACMA was founded in 1961, splitting from the Los Angeles Museum of History, Science and Art. Asco was an East Los Angeles based Chicano artist collective, active from 1972 to 1987. ''Asco'' adopted its name as a collective in 1973, making a direct reference to the word's significance in Spanish ("asco"), which is disgust or repulsion. Willie Herrón
Willie Herrón III (born 1951) is an American Chicano muralist, performance artist and commercial artist. Biography Born in Los Angeles, Willie Herrón III's artistic career spans over forty years of performance and conceptual art, including music composition (member of Los Illegals and founder of ELA's Vex Club), as well as the design and execution of murals. Herrón was also one of the founding members of ASCO, the East Los Angeles based Chicano artists collective (1972 to 1987). He completed six restorations of the historic 1984 Olympic Freeway Murals, Los Angeles 2012-2017, commissioned by the Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles. Patssi Valdez
Patssi Valdez (born 1951) is an American Chicana artist. She is a founding member of the art collective, Asco. Valdez's work represents some of the finest Chicana avant-garde expressionism which includes but not limited to painting, sculpture and fashion design. She lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Early life and education Valdez was born in 1951 and grew up in East Los Angeles. Valdez recalls that during the time she was growing up in Los Angeles, racism, police brutality and poor schools were a big problem. Valdez attended Garfield High School and graduated in 1970. She received a BFA degree in 1985 from Otis Art Institute (now Otis College of Art and Design). Career and work Valdez was a founding member of the Asco artist collective. Gronk (artist)
Gronk (born 1954 in East Los Angeles, California, USA) is the pseudonym of Chicano painter, printmaker, and performance artist Glugio Nicandro. His work is collected by museums around the country including the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Biography Gronk was born in Los Angeles to Mexican-American parents and was raised mainly by his mother. He remembers that he was always making things and he felt that was what he was best at. He also remembers being influenced by popular culture on television. Another artistic influence on Gronk was his uncle who was always drawing and Gronk wanted to be able to draw like him. Another influence on Gronk was foreign film which he generally watched in Santa Monica.
