Henry William Coleman (13 January 1904 – 6 May 1957),Morton, James (2009) ''East End Gangland'', Little, Brown & Company, better known as Harry Corbett, was an English boxer who was British featherweight champion between 1928 and 1929, and also fought for titles at bantamweight and lightweight. Career From Bethnal Green, Coleman began his professional career in September 1921, initially at bantamweight and under the name 'Young Corbett' (in tribute to his hero, Gentleman Jim Corbett, later settling on 'Harry Corbett'), beating Barney Brown and Jack Landon on consecutive days. His first eight fights included four wins and four defeats (one to Harry Mason). He won his next six fight, before losing in January 1922 to Johnny Murton. By the end of 1923 he had built up a record of 55 wins, 10 defeats, 7 losses, and 1 no contest. Liverpool Stadium
Liverpool Stadium was a boxing arena on St. Paul's Square, Bixteth Street, Liverpool, England. The UK's first purpose built boxing arena. The foundation stone was laid by the Earl of Lonsdale on 22 July 1932, and it opened to the public on 20 October 1932. The facade was finished in faience tiling with Art Deco detail, as were the lobby, corridors and public areas inside. The arena itself was wood panelled. The architect was Kenmure Kinna. Aside from boxing, it hosted wrestling matches, pop and rock music concerts (Hawkwind's legendary live album ''The Space Ritual Alive in Liverpool and London'' used recordings from their December 1972 concert at the stadium), political hustings and trade union meetings. Alf Howard (boxer)
Alf Howard (30 April 1906 – 4 July 2010) was an Australian scientist, educator and explorer. He was most prominently known for being the last remaining member of the expedition to Antarctica, which was led by Sir Douglas Mawson on board the RRS Discovery in 1929–1931. Howard served in the capacity of a chemist and the hydrologist aboard the vessel, which included being the individual who was responsible for monitoring the sea-water temperatures and the collection and chemical analysis of sea-water samples. Biography Howard was born and raised in Camberwell, Victoria. He completed a Master of Science, his first of five degrees at the University of Melbourne in 1927; Howard also received an honorary doctorate in statistics and a PhD in linguistics from the University of Queensland. Alfonso Teofilo Brown (July 5, 1902 – April 11, 1951), better known as Panama Al Brown, was a Panamanian professional boxer. He made history by becoming boxing's first Latin American world champion, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest bantamweight boxers in history.Friedman, p. 19. Brown won the NYSAC and lineal bantamweight titles in 1929 after defeating Gregorio Vidal. In 1930 he won both the NBA and IBU bantamweight titles, after defeating Johnny Erickson and Eugène Huat. After relocating to Paris, France, Brown became known within the gay nightlife of the time for his flamboyant lifestyle and his interest in the arts, performing in a cabaret. As an Afro-Panamanian in the US, Brown faced racial barriers throughout his boxing career, and had been stripped of the NYSAC and NBA titles by 1934. Sam Steward (born 1906) was a British boxer who was British lightweight champion between 1928 and 1929. Career Born in Lewisham, London, Sam Steward made his professional boxing debut in January 1922 with a decision over Rube Painter. After winning most of his first 24 fights he was stopped in the tenth round by Billy Bird in July 1924. He had a significant win in December 1925 when he stopped former British featherweight champion Mike Honeyman in the seventh round. In March 1927 he beat lightweight champion of the Netherlands Battling van Dijk and later that year beat both Ernie Izzard and Jack Hyams. He started 1928 with wins over George Rose, Auguste Gyde, and another defeat of Hyams in a title eliminator, before facing Ernie Rice in September for the British lightweight title vacated by Harry Mason, with Steward's ''Sporting Life'' belt also at stake. Knud Larsen (boxer)
Knud Erik Larsen (27 August 1865 – 7 December 1922) was a Danish painter. Biography Born in Vinderød near Frederiksværk, Denmark. He was the son of Jens Peter Larsen (1826–97) and Julie Sophie Olsen (1826–97). Larsen studied painting at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1889. He first exhibited at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition in 1887. Larsen exhibited at the World's Columbian Exposition at Chicago in 1893, the General Art and Industrial Exposition of Stockholm in 1897 and the Baltic Exhibition at Malmö in 1914. Larsen travel to England 1889; Berlin and Dresden 1891; Italy 1898; Paris, the Netherlands, Belgium 1899. Larsen originally painted landscapes and genre images. He adopted a rather conservative but pleasant style which was particularly effective in his landscapes of the Jutland countryside. Johnny Curley (9 November 1897 – 31 December 1982) was an English Boxing, boxer who was British featherweight champion between 1925 and 1927. Career From Lambeth, London, Curley made his professional debut in November 1913. By March 1925 he had fought over 100 times, winning more than 80 contests, including victories over Al Foreman, Ernie Izzard, Battling van Dijk, Billy Hindley, and Bugler Harry Lake. In March 1925 he beat George McKenzie (boxer), George McKenzie on points over 20 rounds at the National Sporting Club to take the British featherweight title. He failed to win any of his next five fights, losing twice to Johnny Cuthbert, and a no contest decision against Phil Bond after both continued fighting after the end of the twelfth round. In October 1925 he was beaten on points by Jack Kid Berg.
