Harry Chan
Hen Fook "Harry" Chan (14 June 1918 – 5 August 1969) was an Australian businessman and politician who was mayor of Darwin, Northern Territory, Darwin. Serving from 1966 to his death in 1969, he was the first ethnic Chinese List of mayors and lord mayors of Darwin, mayor of Darwin. Early life Chan was born in Darwin on 14 June 1918, son of Chan Fong Yuen, a Cantonese migrant and mother, Wong Quee. Chan married Lilyan Yuen, 18 January 1941. They had three sons and a daughter, the eldest and Lilyan were evacuated on the SS Zealandia (1910), SS ''Zealandia'' in late 1941. Businessman Chan and his wife opened a hdl:10070/10864, store in a Sidney Williams hut in Smith Street, later leasing the land to Woolworths which was built on the corner of Smith and Knuckey streets. The Right Worshipful
Worship is an honorific prefix for mayors, justices of the peace and magistrates in present or former Commonwealth realms. Chinatown, Darwin
The Australian city of Darwin was home to a Chinatown when "... 186 Chinese workers arrived in 1874 by ship from Singapore, until World War II." In Darwin, the Chinese faced racial discrimination much more compared to the rest of Australia. Darwin's Chinatown was described as "... an unsightly slum, where cramped unhygenic living conditions endangered public health." These reports were further used "... to order the demolition of several dwellings in Chinatown in 1913." Chinese Australians () are Australians of Chinese ancestry. Chinese Australians are one of the largest groups within the global Chinese diaspora, and are the largest Asian Australian community. Per capita, Australia has more people of Chinese ancestry than any country outside Asia. As a whole, Australian residents identifying themselves as having Chinese ancestry made up 5.5% of Australia's population at the 2021 census. The very early history of Chinese Australians involved significant immigration from villages of the Pearl River Delta in South China, with most such immigrants speaking dialects within the Yue dialect group. East Point, Northern Territory
East Point is an inner northern suburb of the city of Darwin, Northern Territory of Australia. East Point, Lee Point and Point Charles all appear on Goyder's original plan of Port Darwin in 1869. This point, the easterly extremity of the entrance to Darwin Harbour has been used for a variety of purposes. It was the site of naval and anti-aircraft guns during World War II (1942–46), a post war golf course and currently a recreation reserve including a pony club and a war museum.
