Harry Buxton
Henry Richard (Harry) Buxton (13 May 1876 – 23 June 1965) was an Australian politician. He was a Labor Party member of the South Australian House of Assembly from 1918 to 1921, representing the electorate of Burra Burra. Buxton was born at Barossa, the son of H. R. Buxton, a long-time chief guard of the Yatala Labour Prison. He worked as a gardener and at the Islington Railway Workshops before entering politics. He was elected to the House of Assembly at the 1918 election, when along with Labor candidate Mick O'Halloran and Liberal George Jenkins he swept out the three incumbent Farmers and Settlers Association MPs for Burra Burra. It marked the first time Labor had elected two MPs in the electorate. Buxton and O'Halloran were defeated at the 1921 election, succeeded by one Liberal MP and one Country Party MP. Liberal Union (South Australia)
The Liberal Union was a political party in South Australia resulting from a merger between the Liberal and Democratic Union (LDU) and the two independent conservative parties, the Australasian National League (ANL, formerly National Defence League (NDL)) and the Farmers and Producers Political Union (FPPU) as a response to Labor successes culminating in South Australia's first majority government at the 1910 election. The Liberal Union was created in 1910 after the LDU, the ANL and the FPPU endorsed a shared "Liberal" slate of candidates at that year's election. The parties readily approved the merger, however, the LDU which salvaged the fewest of their principles from the merger were more hesitant. LDU leader Archibald Peake persuaded a party conference that 'the day of the middle party is passed', and approved the merger by just one vote. Country Party (South Australia)
The Country Party was a political party in South Australia in the first part of the 20th century. It was formed out of the Farmers and Settlers Association in September 1917 to represent the association's interests in parliament. The party endorsed seven candidates in the 1918 election, with two elected. In the early years, their representatives were usually identified as Farmers and Settlers' Association representatives or as the parliamentary wing of the Farmers and Settlers' Association, but referred to in some sources as Country Party, Independent Country Party or independent members. The Country Party name was formally adopted after the 1921 election. The Country Party eventually merged with the Liberal Federation to create the Liberal and Country League (LCL) in 1932. The Australian Labor Party (South Australian Branch), commonly known as South Australian Labor, is the South Australian Branch of the Australian Labor Party, originally formed in 1891 as the United Labor Party of South Australia.
