Harry Burns (film)
Harry Burns (July 20, 1882 – January 9, 1939) was a vaudeville performer, boxing referee, actor, assistant director, animal-picture director and producer, and Hollywood magazine publisher. Burns was married to the actress Dorothy Vernon; the silent-film slapstick comedy star Bobby Vernon was his stepson. Biography Burns was born Jacob Elman in Warsaw, Poland. He started in vaudeville in New York before 1900 when he captured the attention of audiences as "the world's champion bag puncher." He did nine years of vaudeville, traveling from California to Maine and back again. He was then employed at the Pacific Athletic Club as press agent and secretary to Thomas J. Carey of the Vernon Arena but when 20-round boxing matches were banned in California, he went into the film industry. Curley Stecker
Algernon Maltby "Curley" Stecker (July 10, 1892 – June 16, 1924) was an early Hollywood animal trainer, Universal City Zoo superintendent, animal-film producer, and occasional actor-stuntman. Along with Gay's Lion Farm, Charles Gay, Curley Stecker was one of the two main providers of lions for silent-era Hollywood films. Stecker was also the primary trainer of Joe Martin (orangutan), Joe Martin, Universal's star orangutan, eventually producing Joe Martin comedies alongside director Harry Burns (film), Harry Burns. The near-fatal attack on him in 1923 by Charlie the Elephant, an animal he'd worked with for at least 10 years, made national headlines. In Natacha Rambova's 1926 memoir of her late ex-husband Rudolph Valentino, she wrote that one of their favorite activities was visiting with Curley Stecker at the Universal menagerie, where they would help care for the animals, and listen "for hours" to Stecker's "yarns and experiences. Hollywood Forever Cemetery is a full-service cemetery, funeral home, crematory, and cultural events center which regularly hosts community events such as live music and summer movie screenings. It is one of the oldest cemeteries in Los Angeles, California and is located at 6000 Santa Monica Boulevard in the Hollywood district of Los Angeles. It was founded in 1899 as Hollywood Cemetery, and, from 1939, was known as Hollywood Memorial Park until 1998 when it was given its current name. Dorothy Vernon (born Dorothea Christine Arens, November 11, 1875 – October 28, 1970) was a German-born American film actress. Born Dorothea Christine Arens as the daughter of a Lighthouse warden, she emigrated into the United States as late as 1897. She appeared in more than 130 films between 1919 and 1956. She died in Granada Hills, California from heart disease, aged 94. Her son was actor and entertainer Bobby Vernon.
