Harry Birkhead
Harry Birkhead (1931-2013) was a South African philatelist who signed the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists of South Africa in 1982 and was a Fellow of The Royal Philatelic Society London. He was Honorary Life President of the Philatelic Federation of South Africa. Harry was a specialist in the stamps and postal history of the Anglo-Boer War and the Rhodesias. His Rhodesian collection was sold by Christie's Robson Lowe in 1986. Philately (; ) is the study of postage stamps and postal history. It also refers to the collection and appreciation of stamps and other philatelic products. Philately involves more than just stamp collecting or the study of postage; it is possible to be a philatelist without owning any stamps. For instance, the stamps being studied may be very rare or reside only in museums. Etymology The word "philately" is the English transliteration of the French "", coined by Georges Herpin in 1864. Roll Of Distinguished Philatelists Of South Africa
The Philatelic Federation of South Africa (PFSA) is responsible for inviting philatelists to sign the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists of Southern Africa (RDPSA) (originally the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists of South Africa). The roll is modelled on the original Roll of Distinguished Philatelists established in Great Britain in 1921, and the first signatory to the South African roll was Gilbert J. Allis in 1932. Election to the roll is by a vote at the PFSA congress. The Royal Philatelic Society London (RPSL) is the oldest philatelic society in the world. It was founded on 10 April 1869 as ''The Philatelic Society, London''. The society runs a postal museum, the Spear Museum of Philatelic History, at its headquarters in the City of London. History The society was founded on 10 April 1869 at a meeting at 93 Great Russell Street in the rooms of the stamp dealer J.C. Wilson. Postal History
Postal history is the study of postal systems and how they operate and, or, the study of the use of postage stamps and covers and associated postal artifacts illustrating historical episodes in the development of postal systems.
