Harrison West
Harrison West is a historic urban neighborhood located northwest of downtown Columbus, Ohio. It sits on several blocks along the Olentangy River and includes the western part of the Near Northside Historic District, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. The character of the neighborhood is similar to Victorian Village, which sits just to the east and is more well-known. History Harrison West was established in the late 1800s and early 1900s on farmland that was first plowed by veterans of the Revolutionary War. It features "brick streets, housing built by craftsmen for workers in nearby factories, and fine examples of turn-of-the-century American town planning and architecture." The Harrison West neighborhood area experienced urban decline throughout much of the late 20th century. James Thurber
James Grover Thurber (December 8, 1894 – November 2, 1961) was an American cartoonist, writer, humorist, journalist and playwright. He was best known for his cartoons and short stories, published mainly in ''The New Yorker'' and collected in his numerous books. Thurber was one of the most popular humorists of his time and celebrated the comic frustrations and eccentricities of ordinary people. It was founded in 1879 as the Columbus Art School and is one of the oldest private art and design colleges in the United States. The Columbus Register of Historic Properties is a register for historic buildings and other sites in Columbus, Ohio, United States. The register is maintained by the City of Columbus Historic Resources Commission and Historic Preservation Office, and was established in 1980. First Avenue School (Columbus, Ohio)
The First Avenue School is a former public school building in the Harrison West neighborhood of Columbus, Ohio. It was listed on the Columbus Register of Historic Properties in 1983, and was listed as part of the Near Northside Historic District, on the National Register of Historic Places, in 1980. The building is one of the oldest in the neighborhood, built in 1874. It is also one of the oldest remaining school buildings in Columbus, built at the same time as the Second Avenue School and Stewart Alternative Elementary, also still extant.
