Harrington Beach State Park
Harrington Beach State Park is a Wisconsin state park on the shore of Lake Michigan in the Town of Belgium. In addition to a mile-long beach, the park contains a white cedar swamp surrounding a lake that used to be a stone quarry. The park provides campgrounds, hiking trails, picnic, and bird watch areas. History From the 1890s until 1925, a dolomite quarry operated at the on the site of the park. From 1901 until 1925, the Lake Shore Stone Company developed a company town called Stonehaven at the site. Most of the workers were immigrants from Luxembourg, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and Italy. When the quarry closed, some of the residential buildings were moved to the Village of Belgium. The foundations of some of the building remain in the state park. Ozaukee County is a county in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 91,503. Its county seat is Port Washington, making it one of three Wisconsin counties on Lake Michigan not to have a county seat with the same name. Stonehaven, Wisconsin
Stonehaven is a former community in the Belgium (town), Wisconsin, Town of Belgium, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. From 1901 until 1925, the community was a company town of the Lake Shore Stone Company, which operated a 25-acre Dolomite (rock), dolomite quarry in the area near the western shore of Lake Michigan. The land is now the site of Harrington Beach State Park. History In the 1890s, Milwaukee businessman David Whittaker founded the Northwestern Stone Company to begin quarrying dolomite in the Town of Belgium, along the Lake Michigan shore. Belgium is a village in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. Located along Interstate 43, the village is one of the northernmost communities in the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The population was 2,245 at the 2010 census. Beginning in the 1840s, immigrant farmers from Luxembourg settled in Northern Ozaukee County and formed several rural communities, including Belgium as well as the neighboring hamlets of Dacada, Holy Cross, and Lake Church. Although Belgium grew after a railroad was constructed through the community and incorporated as a village in 1922, the community remained primarily agricultural in the 20th century.
