Harringay Canaries (Speedway)
The Harringay Canaries were a motorcycle speedway team who raced at the Harringay Stadium from 1929 until 1931 in the Southern League. History The Canaries were the first of three speedway teams to be based at Harringay. In their inaugural season the Canaries finished 8th in the 1929 Speedway Southern League. The following season they slipped to 12th place in the 1930 Speedway Southern League. In 1931, they resigned during the season, with their fixtures being taken over by Belle Vue Aces. From 1934 to 1939 the team returned as the Harringay Tigers but racing ceased because of World War II. The Belle Vue Aces are a British motorcycle speedway, speedway club, based in Manchester. The club hold the record of having won the top tier List of United Kingdom speedway league champions, League championship 13 times. They currently compete in the SGB Premiership, racing at The National Speedway Stadium, with home matches usually taking place on Monday evenings. They also run a second team in the National League (speedway), National Development League, known as the Belle Vue Colts. History Racing first took place in 1928 at the Belle Vue (greyhound racing), Belle Vue greyhound stadium in Kirkmanshulme Lane before moving the following year to a specially built Hyde Road (speedway), stadium nearby on Hyde Road. 1931 Speedway Southern League
The 1931 Southern League was the third season of speedway in the United Kingdom for Southern British teams, and its final season before amalgamation of the Southern and Northern Leagues. The Northern teams also had their third season known as the 1931 Speedway Northern League. Summary Both Birmingham teams based at Perry Barr and Hall Green had left as had Coventry who returned mid-season to replace Leicester who were liquidated in April. Harringay Canaries resigned in June to be replaced by Belle Vue who then rode both in the Northern and Southern Leagues. Nottingham closed in July but they were not replaced and their results stood. The league season was the longest in the short history of the competition as teams met each other four times instead of twice. The Wembley Lions won their second consecutive title finishing three points clear of 1929 champions Stamford Bridge. Vic Huxley
Victor Nelson Huxley (23 September 1906 – 24 June 1982 in Brisbane. Queensland) was a speedway rider who won the Star Riders' Championship, the forerunner of the Speedway World Championship, in 1930 and finished runner-up in 1931 and 1932. He also won the London Riders' Championship in 1936 whilst with the Wimbledon Dons. Huxley won the 1934 Australian Championship (3 Laps) in front of his home crowd at the Brisbane Exhibition Ground. Vic Huxley retired from British speedway at the end of the 1936 season and returned to Australia where he rode in the Winter test series against England. History The Racers were the third of three speedway teams to be based at Harringay Stadium. Harringay Stadium
Harringay Stadium was a major greyhound racing and motorcycle speedway venue in Harringay, north London. It was built and opened in 1927 and closed in 1987. Construction Harringay Stadium was the third greyhound racing stadium to open in Britain. It was owned by the Greyhound Racing Association Ltd (GRA). After great success with their first track at Belle Vue in Manchester in 1926, they opened both White City and Harringay stadiums in 1927. The driving force behind the GRA, and its managing director until the 1960s, was Brigadier-General Alfred Critchley, who wrote in his autobiography that, when he first learned of greyhound racing, "It immediately occurred to me that this might prove to be the poor man's racecourse". Apparently his interest in how the lower-paid classes were losing money by backing horses was born out of concern for his valet who lost large sums betting on horse racing. Motorcycle Speedway
Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand).
