Edward Henry Harriman
Edward Henry Harriman (February 20, 1848 – September 9, 1909) was an American financier and railroad executive. Early life Harriman was born on February 20, 1848, in Hempstead, New York, the son of Orlando Harriman Sr., an Episcopal clergyman, and Cornelia Neilson. He had a brother, Orlando Harriman Jr. His great-grandfather, William Harriman, had emigrated from England in 1795 and became a successful businessman and trader. As a young boy, Harriman spent a summer working at the Greenwood Iron Furnace in the area owned by the Robert Parker Parrott family that would become Harriman State Park. He quit school at age 14 to take a job as an errand boy on Wall Street in New York City. His uncle Oliver Harriman had earlier established a career there. By age 22, he was a member of the New York Stock Exchange. Henry Harriman (June 9, 1804 – May 17, 1891) was one of the First Seven Presidents of the Seventy of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints from 1838 until his death. The town of Herriman, Utah was named after him. Biography Harriman was born in Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts to Enoch Harriman and Sarah Brocklebank. In 1832, he was baptized a member of the Latter Day Saint church by Orson Hyde. Harriman moved to Kirtland, Ohio in 1834 and was a member of Zion's Camp later that year. In February 1838, he became one of the Seven Presidents of the Seventy. That same year, Harriman was one of the leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints who moved from Kirtland to Daviess County, Missouri in the Kirtland Camp. John Harriman (1760–1831) was an English cleric and botanist. Life Harriman was born at Maryport, Cumberland, into a family of German background named Hermann. became a medical student at 17; but after two years returned to classical studies, and then took holy orders. He became curate of Bassenthwaite in 1787. He moved on to Barnard Castle, Egglestone, and Gainford in County Durham, Long Horseley in Northumberland, Heighington and Croxdale, and lastly to the perpetual curacy of Satley, Durham. Harriman concentrated on the botany of Teesdale. He published nothing, but maintained a correspondence with other botanists. He was knowledgeable about lichens and discovered species.
