Dame Harriette Chick DBE (6 January 1875 – 9 July 1977) was a British microbiologist, protein scientist and nutritionist. She is best remembered for demonstrating the roles of sunlight and cod liver oil in preventing rickets. Biography Early life and education She was born in London, England as the fifth child of seven daughters and four sons of Samuel Chick and Emma Hooley, a Methodist family. Her father owned property and sold lace. The Chick children were brought up strictly with no frivolities and regular attendance at family prayers. All seven girls attended Notting Hill High School, a girls' school thought to be outstanding for its teaching in the sciences. Harriette Deborah Lacy (1807–1874) was an English actress. Born in London, she was the daughter of a tradesman named Taylor. Her first appearance on the stage was at Bath in 1827 as Julia in ''The Rivals'', and she was immediately given leading parts there, in both comedy and tragedy. Harriette Vyda Simms Moore (June 19, 1902 – January 3, 1952) was an American educator and civil rights worker. She was the wife of Harry T. Moore, who founded the first branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in Brevard County, Florida. The murder of the Moores was the first assassination to happen during the Civil Rights Movement and the only time both a husband and a wife were killed for their activism. Harriette Newell Woods Baker (pen names Mrs. Madeline Leslie and Aunt Hattie; August 19, 1815 – April 26, 1893) was an American author of books for children, and editor. Her career as an author began when she was about 30 years old. She devoted herself successfully to novels; but after about 15 years, she wrote popular religious literature. Her most famous book, '' Tim, the Scissors Grinder'', sold half a million copies, and was translated into several languages. Harriette Simpson Arnow (July 7, 1908 – March 22, 1986) was an American novelist and historian, who lived in Kentucky and Michigan. Arnow has been called an expert on the people of the Southern Appalachian Mountains, but she herself loved cities and spent crucial periods of her life in Cincinnati and Detroit. Early life and education Arnow was born as Harriette Louisa Simpson in Monticello, Wayne County, Kentucky, and grew up in neighboring Pulaski County. Harriette Smythies, (b. 1813 – d. 1883, aged 69), was an English novelist and poet. She was a prolific writer of sensation novels, publishing 20 books between 1838 and 1875. Life Smythies was born Harriet Maria Gordon in 1813 to an aristocratic military family in Margate, Kent. Her parents were Jane Gordon (née Halliday) and Edward Lesmoir Gordon, a Sergeant-at-Arms. Harriette Walters (born c. 1956) is a former civil servant who worked as a tax assessments manager for the District of Columbia. She was convicted of being the central participant in the largest fraud scheme ever perpetrated by a District of Columbia government official.
