Harriet Records
Harriet Records was an American independent record label based out of Cambridge, Massachusetts. The label was founded by Harvard history professor Tim Alborn in 1989 in music, 1989. The label was named for the children's book ''Harriet the Spy''. The majority of Harriet's releases were indie pop 7" gramophone record, vinyl singles, but eventually they started releasing full length CDs. Harriet gave a number of notable artists their start. John Darnielle, Wimp Factor 14, My Favorite, Crayon, band, Crayon, Six Cents and Natalie, Tullycraft, and The Magnetic Fields all released early records on Harriet. After forty-five singles and ten CDs Harriet shut its doors in 1998 in music, 1998. Independent Record Label
An independent record label (or indie label) is a record label that operates without the funding or distribution of major record labels; they are a type of small- to medium-sized enterprise, or SME. The labels and artists are often represented by trade associations in their country or region, which in turn are represented by the international trade body, the Worldwide Independent Network (WIN). Many of the labels started as producers and distributors of specific genres of music, such as jazz music, or represent something new and non-mainstream, such as Elvis Presley in the early days. Indies release rock, soul, R&B, jazz, blues, gospel, reggae, hip hop, and world music. Linda Smith (home Recording Singer-songwriter)
Linda Smith is an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and home recording artist who began self-releasing cassette albums in the late 1980s. Beginning in the 1990s, some of her recordings were released in vinyl and CD form on indie labels such as Slumberland Records and Harriet Records. In 2021, the Captured Tracks label reissued a selection of her recordings on an album called ''Till Another Time: 1988–1996''. ''Paste Magazine'' described the release as a "hidden treasure of America’s pop underground." In the 1980s, prior to her solo career, Smith was in a New York City band called the Woods. ''Old Traditions, New Standards'' is the debut album from the Washington-based indiepop band Tullycraft. In 2022, ''Old Traditions, New Standards'' was included on ''Pitchfork''s list of ''The 25 Best Indie Pop Albums of the '90s''. The album was produced by Pat Maley. Tracks were recorded at Avast Studios in Seattle and mixed at Yoyo Studios in Olympia. The album was originally released on Harriet Records out of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Robynn Iwata from the band cub provided guest vocals on the song "Josie," and Chris Munford from the band Incredible Force of Junior provided guest vocals on the song "Mental Obsession." The album reached #22 on the CMJ Top 200 chart. The song "Pop Songs Your New Boyfriend's Too Stupid to Know About" was listed as essential listening in Pitchfork Media's 2005 article on Twee Pop entitled "Twee as Fuck." Crayon - Brick Factory
Crayon was an indie pop band from Washington State. History Crayon formed in 1990 in Bellingham, Washington, featuring Brad Roberts (guitar/vocals), Sean Tollefson (bass/vocals) and Jeff Fell (drums). Their sound has been compared to twee and punk contemporaries including Pavement, Beat Happening, Hüsker Dü, and Sebadoh. In the four years they were together, Crayon released a handful of 7" singles and one full-length album, ''Brick Factory'', on Harriet Records. Roberts left the group in 1994 and Tollefson & Fell went on to form the seminal indie pop band Tullycraft in 1995. In 2014, HHBTM Records reissued ''Brick Factory'' on limited edition vinyl and cassette to commemorate the 20th anniversary of its release. The re-release met a positive reception from critics, who saw it as both an entertaining listen and an important window into music of the early 1990s. Rizzo (band)
Rizzo was an American punk band from Los Angeles, California, United States. History Sarah Dale (drums and vocals) and Jen Abercrombie (guitar and vocals) formed the band in 1995. They originally called themselves Mopar, but after discovering that they had both played the role of Rizzo in their high school productions of '' Grease'', they changed their name to that of the character. The Extra Glenns
The Extra Lens, formerly known as The Extra Glenns, is a band made up of Franklin Bruno (of Nothing Painted Blue and The Human Hearts) and John Darnielle (of the Mountain Goats). The band acts as a side project for both artists, and stayed underground throughout the 1990s, recording tracks for singles and some compilations. Both artists primarily concentrate on their own solo work, though as their popularity has grown, they have continued to work together. In the early 2000s, the duo decided to keep the project going, and in 2002 Absolutely Kosher Records released ''Martial Arts Weekend'', their first full-length album.
