Harriet Kirkwood
Grace Harriet Sara Kirkwood (née Jameson; 28 September 1880 – 20 June 1953) was an Irish artist, known for her landscape and still life paintings. Kirkwood was born in Sutton, Dublin. Her parents were the chairman and managing director of John Jameson & Son Ltd, Andrew Jameson, and Grace Elizabeth Anna Maria (née Burke). She was the middle child of three daughters. Kirkwood studied under Mary Manning, going on to attend Metropolitan School of Art, Dublin from 1908 to 1909. On 4 March 1910, she married Major Thomas William Kirkwood. He was supportive of Kirkwood's artistic pursuits and encouraged her. They lived for a short period in Russia in 1913, where she took lessons in painting from Ilya Mashkov in Moscow. Upon their return to Dublin, she re-registered at the Metropolitan School of Art, and attended the Slade School of Fine Art, London from 1919 to 1920. Sutton ( ga, Cill Fhionntain – Fintan's cell or church) is a residential suburb on the Northside of Dublin, Ireland. It occupies the tombolo which links Howth Head to the mainland, some of the lower slopes of Howth Hill, and a little of the adjacent coasts. The area lies within the jurisdiction of Fingal County Council. There is a small commercial core at the Sutton Cross road intersection. National Gallery Of Ireland
The National Gallery of Ireland ( ga, Gailearaí Náisiúnta na hÉireann) houses the national collection of Irish and European art. It is located in the centre of Dublin with one entrance on Merrion Square, beside Leinster House, and another on Clare Street. It was founded in 1854 and opened its doors ten years later. The Irish Exhibition of Living Art (IELA) was a yearly exhibition of Irish abstract expressionism and avant-garde Irish art that was started in 1943 by Mainie Jellett. Background World War II Ireland During World War II, Ireland remained neutral. The period was known as "the Emergency" in Ireland. In line with its neutral stance in the war, Ireland did not engage directly in the war and declined to make any kind of allegiance to the Axis or Allied powers. As a result, Ireland experienced a period of isolation from the rest of the Western world, with few Irish people travelling abroad and few foreigners travelling to Ireland. Edward McGuire (painter)
Edward McGuire (1932–1986) was an Irish painter. Biography The Irish portraitist, still-life artist and bird painter Edward McGuire was born in Dublin in 1932. He studied painting, drawing and the history of art at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma in 1953 and at the Slade School of Fine Art in 1954. The Society of Dublin Painters or Dublin Painters Group was formed in Ireland in 1920 to promote Irish modern art. History The Society of Dublin Painters was founded in 1920 by Paul and Grace Henry, Mary Swanzy, Letitia Marion Hamilton, Jack B. Yeats, and Harry Clarke. As the original meeting notes have been lost, there is some uncertainty as to which artists were there at the inaugural meeting. Along with these potential founding members, Clare Marsh, E.M. André Lhote
André Lhote (5 July 1885 – 24 January 1962) was a French Cubist painter of figure subjects, portraits, landscapes and still life. He was also active and influential as a teacher and writer on art. Early life and education Lhote was born 5 July 1885 in Bordeaux, France, and learned wood carving and sculpture from the age of 12, when his father apprenticed him to a local furniture maker to be trained as a sculptor in wood. He enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux in 1898 and studied decorative sculpture until 1904. Whilst there, he began to paint in his spare time and he left home in 1905, moving into his own studio to devote himself to painting. He was influenced by Gauguin and Cézanne and held his first one-man exhibition at the Galerie Druet in 1910, four years after he had moved to Paris.
