Harold Whitaker
Harold Jackson Whitaker (5 June 1920 – 26 December 2013) was a British animator, whose credits included ''Animal Farm'' in 1954 and '' Heavy Metal'' in 1981. He first worked for Anson Dyer, before spending thirty years as an animator for Halas and Batchelor. He made a comic strip adaptation of ''Animal Farm'' in 1954. Whitaker was born on 5 June 1920 in Cottingham, East Yorkshire. He was raised in Manchester and studied drawing at Macclesfield art school. In 1981, Whitaker published a book, ''Timing for Animation''. ''Timing for Animation'' was republished in 2002 to include an introduction written by John Lasseter, the President of Pixar Studios. Animator
An animator is an artist who creates multiple images, known as frames, which give an illusion of movement called animation when displayed in rapid sequence. Animators can work in a variety of fields including film, television, and video games. Animation is closely related to filmmaking and like filmmaking is extremely labor-intensive, which means that most significant works require the collaboration of several animators. The methods of creating the images or frames for an animation piece depend on the animators' artistic styles and their field. Other artists who contribute to animated cartoons, but who are not animators, include layout artists (who design the backgrounds, lighting, and camera angles), storyboard artists (who draw panels of the action from the script), and background artists (who paint the "scenery"). ''Stowaways on the Ark'' is a 1988 German animated adventure film, released theatrically in Germany as ''In der Arche ist der Wurm drin'' ( ''The Worm Is in the Ark'') by United International Pictures on 24 March 1988. It's inspired by the story of Noah's Ark from the Book of Genesis. The film was later released in the United States and Canada. Plot An old woodworm who lives in a very small piece of wood, near the top of a mountain, tells the story of his ancestors on their journey on the ark. Willi, the oldest ancestor in the old worm's family tree, lives on a hole in a trunk, alongside his wife, Alice. One day, while both of them are eating in their house, it starts shaking. Poddington Peas
''The Poddington Peas'' is a British animated television series that was created by Paul Needs and Colin Wyatt of Cairnvale Productions for Poddington PLC; it has thirteen five-minute episodes, and was aired on BBC One as part of the Children's BBC strand (as it had been known from its inception on 9 September 1985 until 4 October 1997) from 14 September to 22 December 1989. The series was regularly repeated throughout the 90s and early 00s until 2002. The series' theme song, composed by Geoff Stephens, describes the eponymous group of Peas living "down at the bottom of the garden". Human-sized garden objects, enormous in size to the Peas, are often seen, such as upturned flowerpots which serve as most of their buildings. Humans themselves are never seen or mentioned (with the single exception of Christmas gift-giver Santa Claus, who left his gifts at Creepy Castle in the last episode). ''The Dreamstone'' is a British animated television series that ran for four series, with 13 episodes per series between 1990 and 1995. The original concept and artwork were created by Michael Jupp, and the series was written by Sue Radley and Martin Gates. The series was produced by Martin Gates Productions (MGP) for a wholly-owned subsidiary of Central (a part of Independent Television) and Filmfair. ''When the Wind Blows'' is a 1986 British animated disaster film directed by Jimmy Murakami based on Raymond Briggs' comic book or graphic novel of the same name. The film stars the voices of John Mills and Peggy Ashcroft as the two main characters and was scored by Roger Waters. The film recounts a rural English couple's attempt to survive a nearby nuclear attack and maintain a sense of normality in the subsequent fallout and nuclear winter. The film was Briggs' second collaboration with TVC, after their efforts with a special based on another work of his, ''The Snowman'', in 1982. It was distributed by Recorded Releasing in the UK, and by Kings Road Entertainment in the United States. ''The Twelve Tasks of Asterix'' (''Les Douze travaux d'Astérix'') is a 1976 Belgian/French animated feature film based on the ''Asterix'' comic book series, and the third in the animated franchise. René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo, the creators of the series, wrote the story and directed the film themselves; with co-direction by Pierre Watrin and the screenplay co-written by Pierre Tchernia, a friend of Goscinny and Uderzo. The film was directed, produced and animated at Goscinny and Uderzo's own animation studio, Studios Idéfix and is the only Asterix animated film that has used the Xerography Process. ''Animal Farm'' is a 1954 animated film directed by animators John Halas and Joy Batchelor. It was produced by Halas and Batchelor and funded in part by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), who also made changes to the original movie script. It was based on the 1945 novel of the same name by George Orwell. Although the film was a financial failure and took 15 years to generate a profit, it quickly became a staple in classrooms across the United Kingdom, the United States and other English-speaking countries like Australia, Canada, and New Zealand into the 1980s.
