Jay Silverheels (born Harold Jay Smith; May 26, 1912 – March 5, 1980) was an Indigenous Canadian actor and athlete. He was well known for his role as Tonto, the Native American companion of the Lone Ranger in the American Western television series ''The Lone Ranger''. Early life Silverheels was born Harold Jay Smith in Canada, on the Six Nations of the Grand River, near Hagersville, Ontario. He was a grandson of Mohawk Chief A. G. Smith and Mary Wedge, and one of the 11 children of Captain Alexander George Edwin Smith, MC, Cayuga, and his wife Mabel Phoebe Dockstater, maternal Mohawk, and paternal Seneca. His father was wounded and decorated for service at the battles of Somme and Ypres during World War I, and later was an adjutant training Polish-American recruits for the Blue Army for service in France, at Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. Sir Harold Smith (18 April 1876 – 10 September 1924) was a Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom, perhaps better known for having been the brother of F. E. Smith than for his own comparatively modest parliamentary career. Parliamentary career Smith unsuccessfully contested the West Riding of Yorkshire constituency of Huddersfield at the January 1910 general election, but at the December 1910 general election, Smith was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Warrington in Lancashire. His victory over the sitting Liberal Party MP Arthur Crosfield was a narrow one, but at the post-war general election in December 1918, Smith received the coalition coupon and was re-elected with a large majority. He was knighted in the 1921 New Year Honours. Sir Harold Gengoult Smith (25 July 1890 – 14 April 1983) was an Australian medical practitioner who served as Lord Mayor of Melbourne from 1931 to 1934. Smith was born in Melbourne to Marion Jane (née Higgins) and Louis Lawrence Smith, both English immigrants. His father was a doctor and member of parliament, while his sister was the musical publisher Louise Hanson-Dyer. Smith attended Melbourne Grammar School and then moved to Scotland to study medicine. However, his studies were interrupted by the war and he instead enlisted in the British Army, serving in France with the 2nd Dragoon Guards. Smith eventually received his qualifications in medicine in 1917. Harold C. Smith Jr. (born February 5, 1954) is an American scientist, researcher, professor, founder and CEO of OyaGen. Smith has written over 100 publications on his research in RNA editing, AIDS, oncology, and immunodeficiency, among others. Early life Harold Smith was born in Germany to an Austrian mother and American father who was stationed in Austria with the military at the end of World War II. In 6th grade, Smith and his family moved from Frankfurt, Germany to Massachusetts where he completed his high school education. Education Smith received his Bachelor of Arts in Biology in 1975 and his Master of Science in Veterinary Pharmacology and Physiology in 1978 at Purdue University. He then went to the State University at Buffalo where he obtained his Masters of Arts in Molecular Biology in 1980 and his PhD in Molecular Biology in 1982. Harold Smith (diver)
Edwin Harold Smith (February 19, 1909 – March 5, 1958) was an American diver who competed at the 1928 and 1932 Summer Olympics. In 1928, he finished fourth in the 3m springboard. Four years later in the 1932 Summer Olympics, he won the gold medal in the 10m platform and a silver in the 3m springboard. Domestically, he won the AAU springboard titles in the 1m in 1928 and 1930; and in the 3m in 1930 and 1931. After the 1932 Olympics, he became a professional show diver, and a diving coach at New York Athletic Club and Yale University. He also prepared the German diving team to the 1936 Summer Olympics. During World War II, he served as a captain in the United States Marine Corps. After the war, he worked as a pool manager at luxury hotels in Palm Springs and Santa Barbara. He died at age 49 of cancer.
