Harold McNamara
Harold Joseph "Hal" McNamara (October 3, 1888 – August 27, 1937) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player, playing as a defenceman. He had two professional ice hockey playing brothers in George and Howard. Born in Randolph, Ontario he lived until 1937 before dying in Peru. Playing career He started as a professional with the Canadian Soo Algonquins of the International Hockey League in 1905–06. He later played for the Edmonton HC of the Alberta Amateur Hockey Association; the Toronto Pro HC and Waterloo Colts of the Ontario Professional Hockey League; and the Cobalt Silver Kings, Renfrew Creamery Kings, Toronto Ontarios and Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey Association before retiring in 1917. 1908 Stanley Cup challenge McNamara was one of the Edmonton Hockey Club's 'ringers' who played in an unsuccessful Stanley Cup challenge against the Montreal Wanderers in December 1908. Defenceman
Defence or defense (in American English) in ice hockey is a player position that is primarily responsible for preventing the opposing team from Goal (ice hockey), scoring. They are often referred to as defencemen, D, D-men or blueliners (the latter a reference to the blue line in ice hockey which represents the boundary of the offensive zone; defencemen generally position themselves along the line to keep the puck in the zone). George McNamara
George Andrew McNamara (August 26, 1886 – March 10, 1952) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He was a member of the 1914 Toronto Blueshirts Stanley Cup champions. His brothers Harold and Howard also played professional ice hockey. McNamara was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1958. Playing career When McNamara was a youngster, his family moved to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and it was in the Soo that he first learned the game of hockey. McNamara made his professional hockey debut playing with the Sault Ste. Marie Marlboros of the International Hockey League during the 1906–1907 season. George and his brother, Howard, also briefly a member of the Soo Marlboros, were known as the "Dynamite Twins" because of their bone-crunching body checks. Halifax Crescents
The Halifax Crescents were an early amateur and later, professional ice hockey team operating in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The team operated in several leagues, gone defunct and been resurrected. The original club challenged for the Stanley Cup in 1900. The last Crescents team in senior hockey operated in 1947–48. Chronology The team played in the Halifax City Hockey League from 1899 until 1910. The club was one of founders of the Inter-provincial Professional League in 1910, which became the Maritime Professional Hockey League from 1911 until 1914. After the MPHL shut down, the club fielded a team again in the Halifax City League until 1925. In 1940, the Crescents name was resurrected in the HCHL league until 1946. Montreal Wanderers
The Montreal Wanderers were an amateur, and later professional, ice hockey team based in Montreal. The team played in the Federal Amateur Hockey League (FAHL), the Eastern Canada Amateur Hockey Association (ECAHA), the National Hockey Association (NHA) and briefly the National Hockey League (NHL). The Wanderers were four-time Stanley Cup winners. Prior to the formation of the NHL, the "Redbands" were one of the most successful teams in hockey. The 1909 ECHA season was the fourth and final season of the Eastern Canada Hockey Association (ECHA). Teams played a twelve-game schedule. The Stanley Cup (french: La Coupe Stanley) is the championship trophy awarded annually to the National Hockey League (NHL) playoff champion. It is the oldest existing trophy to be awarded to a professional sports franchise in North America, and the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) considers it to be one of the "most important championships available to the sport". The trophy was commissioned in 1892 as the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup and is named after Lord Stanley of Preston, the Governor General of Canada, who donated it as an award to Canada's top-ranking amateur ice hockey club. National Hockey Association
The National Hockey Association (NHA), officially the National Hockey Association of Canada Limited, was a professional ice hockey organization with teams in Ontario and Quebec, Canada. It is the direct predecessor of today's National Hockey League (NHL). Founded in 1909 by Ambrose O'Brien, the NHA introduced 'six-man hockey' by removing the 'rover' position in 1911. During its lifetime, the league coped with competition for players with the rival Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA), the enlistment of players for World War I and disagreements between owners.
