Harold Hubert Rusland
Harold Hubert Rusland (26 June 1938 – 28 January 2023) was a Surinamese politician. A member of the Nationalist Republican Party, he served as Minister of Education from 1980 to 1983. His son Gregory Rusland is leader of the National Party of Suriname The National Party of Suriname ( nl, Nationale Partij Suriname, NPS) is a social democratic political party in Suriname, founded in 1946, and since June 2012 led by Gregory Rusland. Nationalist Republican Party (Suriname)
The Nationalist Republican Party ( nl, Partij Nationalistische Republiek, PNR) was a political party in Suriname, existing from 1959 to 1980. History In 1951, Surinamese students in the Netherlands founded the cultural association ''Wi Eigi Sani'' ("our own things"). In 1959, the association became a political party under the name "Nationalist Republican Party" (PNR), and began its activities in Suriname. In the 1969 parliamentary election, the party secured one seat, by Eddy Bruma. In 1973, in a coalition with the National Party of Suriname, the party won 4 seats in the parliament. In the cabinet of Henck Arron from December 24, 1973 to 1977, the cabinet consisted of 3 representatives of the party. In 1977, the coalition broke up and the Nationalist Republican Party went to the elections independently, without receiving seats in the parliament. Ronald Venetiaan
Ronald Runaldo Venetiaan (born 18 June 1936) is a former politician who served as the 6th President of Suriname. Biography Venetiaan was born in Paramaribo. In 1955, Venetiaan left Suriname to study mathematics and physics at the University of Leiden. In 1964, he obtained his doctorandus, and returned to Suriname to become a mathematics and physics teacher. In 1973 Venetiaan was Minister of Education for the National Party of Suriname (NPS) in the government of Henck Arron. He was disposed by the 1980 Surinamese coup d'état. Venetiaan decided to teach at the Anton de Kom University. In 1987, Venetiaan returned to politics as the Chairman of the National Party of Suriname, and as the Minister of Education. His first term as president ran from 1991 to 1996, after which he lost in the elections to Jules Wijdenbosch. Gregory Rusland
Gregory Allan Rusland (born 9 November 1959) is a Surinamese politician. He served as Minister for Natural Resources between 2005 and 2010. In 2012 he became leader of the National Party of Suriname. Rusland has been a member of the National Assembly since 2015. Early life and career Rusland was born on 9 November 1959 in Paramaribo. He studied agricultural production at the Anton de Kom University of Suriname and received a bachelor's degree in 1982. He continued his studies in the same field at the University of Florida and obtained an MSc in 1984. Rusland obtained a further PhD at the same institute in 1987. He held several teaching positions at the Anton de Kom University of Suriname between 1987 and 2005. Between 1987 and 2000 Rusland also helped found several institutes at the university. National Party Of Suriname
The National Party of Suriname ( nl, Nationale Partij Suriname, NPS) is a social democratic political party in Suriname, founded in 1946, and since June 2012 led by Gregory Rusland. For a long time it was the largest ruling party in the country, and it has been in government for a total of over 40 years. Of the 16 general elections held in Suriname, the party or a coalition it was a leading part of finished in first place 11 times. The party tends to be more popular among Afro-Surinamese and multiracial people. At the 2005 legislative elections, the party was part of the New Front for Democracy and Development that won 41.2% of the popular vote and 23 out of 51 seats in the National Assembly.
