Harold Elverston
Sir Harold Elverston (26 December 1866 – 10 August 1941) was a British Liberal Party politician. Background He was born on 26 December 1866, the third son of James Booth Elverston of Heaton Chapel, Stockport. He was educated privately. He married in 1899, Josephine Taylor, daughter of J. J. Taylor of Rusholme, a newspaper proprietor. They had three sons. Career He was a member of Manchester City Council. He served on the Executive Committee of the National Liberal Federation from 1906 to 1910. He served as Hon. Secretary of the Lancashire and Cheshire Liberal Federation from 1906 to 1925. He served as a Justice of the Peace in Cheshire. He first stood for parliament when he contested the 1908 Worcester by-election, a seat that the Conservatives held. Herbert Conyers Surtees
Brigadier-General Sir Herbert Conyers Surtees (13 January 1858 – 18 April 1933) was a British military leader, politician and historical author. Early life He was born in London on 13 January 1858. He was the only son of Col. Charles Freville Surtees DL JP (1823–1906) of the 10th Hussars and his wife, Bertha Chauncey. He was christened in St James' Church in Paddington. He was descended from Robert Surtees of Mainsforth. His father was MP for South Durham 1865 to 1868. He was educated at Harrow School and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, before entering the British Army in 1876, joining the 49th Regiment of Foot. In October 1877, he transferred to the Coldstream Guards and remained with them for the rest of his career. Career He worked initially as a "musket instructor". John Brotherton (Labour Politician)
John Brotherton (7 March 1867 – 8 March 1941) was Labour MP for Gateshead. Born in Leeds, Brotherton completed an apprenticeship as an engineer, and joined the Amalgamated Society of Engineers, serving as a branch secretary for 21 years. Brotherton stood unsuccessfully as the Labour Party candidate for Gateshead at the 1918 United Kingdom general election. He won the seat from the Unionists in 1922, but lost it to the Liberals in 1923. In 1927, he was elected to Leeds City Council, serving until 1930, and again from 1932 onwards. 1918 United Kingdom General Election
The 1918 United Kingdom general election was called immediately after the Armistice with Germany which ended the First World War, and was held on Saturday, 14 December 1918. The governing coalition, under Prime Minister David Lloyd George, sent letters of endorsement to candidates who supported the coalition government. These were nicknamed "Coalition Coupons", and led to the election being known as the "coupon election". The result was a massive landslide in favour of the coalition, comprising primarily the Conservatives and Coalition Liberals, with massive losses for Liberals who were not endorsed. Nearly all the Liberal MPs without coupons were defeated, including party leader H. H. Asquith. It was the first general election to include on a single day all eligible voters of the United Kingdom, although the vote count was delayed until 28 December so that the ballots cast by soldiers serving overseas could be included in the tallies.
