Harold Douglas Briggs
Brigadier General Harold Douglas Briggs, (29 September 1877 – 13 September 1944) was a senior Royal Navy and Royal Air Force officer who played a leading role in British naval aviation during the First World War. Background Briggs was born 29 September 1877. After joining the Royal Navy as a young man, Briggs showed steady career progression and by 1908 was on the staff of the Admiral Commanding Coast Guards and Reserves. Towards the end of 1911 he was promoted to commander and at the end of 1912 he became the executive officer on . In 1915 Briggs was appointed Officer-in-Command of Air Stations under the Admiral Commanding the East Coast of England. Later that year he joined the staff of the Inspecting Captain of Air Training. In November Briggs was promoted to acting wing captain and the following January he became the Inspecting Captain of Air Training himself. Sunderland, Tyne And Wear
Sunderland () is a port city in Tyne and Wear, England. It is the City of Sunderland's administrative centre and in the historic county of Durham. The city is from Newcastle-upon-Tyne and is on the River Wear's mouth to the North Sea. The river also flows through Durham roughly south-west of Sunderland City Centre. The Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) was the air arm of the Royal Navy, under the direction of the Admiralty's Air Department, and existed formally from 1 July 1914 to 1 April 1918, when it was merged with the British Army's Royal Flying Corps to form the Royal Air Force (RAF), the world's first independent air force. It was replaced by the Fleet Air Arm, initially consisting of those RAF units that normally operated from ships, but emerging as a separate unit similar to the original RNAS by the time of World War 2. Francis Rowland Scarlett
Air Vice Marshal Francis Rowland Scarlett, (18 May 1875 – 15 April 1934) was a senior Royal Air Force commander. Early and family life Francis Rowland Scarlett was born on 18 May 1875, the son of Lieutenant Colonel William James Scarlett. At the age of 29 he married Dora Blakiston-Houston, the daughter of John Blakiston-Houston, an Irish Unionist Party politician. He was the father of Air Vice Marshal James Rowland Scarlett-Streatfeild who was killed serving in the Second World War. Military career Scarlett joined the Royal Navy in (or around) 1891, and held the rank of lieutenant when in July 1902 he was posted as 1st lieutenant on the training ship HMS ''Caledonia'', anchored at the Firth of Forth. John Luce (Royal Navy Officer)
Rear Admiral John Luce, (4 February 1870 – 22 September 1932) was a senior officer in the Royal Navy during and after the First World War. He played a significant role in the early development of British naval aviation and held command during the Battle of Coronel and the Battle of the Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic. Early and family life John Luce was born on 4 February 1870 at Halcombe, Malmesbury, in the English county of Wiltshire. In 1902, he married Mary Dorothea Tucker; and they had three children. The eldest, Alfred, born on 6 November 1903, also joined the Navy and was executive officer of during the pursuit of the German battleship ''Bismarck''.
