Harold Cohen (politician)
Brigadier Harold Edward Cohen, (25 November 1881 – 29 October 1946) was an Australian soldier, lawyer and, like his grandfather Edward Cohen, a Victorian State politician. Early life Cohen was the son of Montague and Annie Cohen and born in St Kilda, Melbourne. He married Freda Pirani on 4 December 1907, and they had two sons and two daughters. Cohen was educated at Xavier College where he was the first Jewish boy to attend the school. He was School Captain in 1898 was President of the Old Xaverians Association from 1919-1920. He continued his studies at Melbourne University. Prior to being a politician, Cohen was a solicitor, soldier and a company director. Political career In 1929, Cohen was elected as a Nationalist Party MP for Melbourne South Province in the Victorian Legislative Council. Harold Cohen (artist)
Harold Cohen (1 May 1928 – 27 April 2016) was a British-born artist who was noted as the creator of AARON, a computer program designed to produce art autonomously. His work in the intersection of computer artificial intelligence and art attracted a great deal of attention, leading to exhibitions at many museums, including the Tate Gallery in London, and acquisitions by many others. Early life Cohen was born in London, the son of Polish-Russian parents, and was educated there at the Slade School of Fine Art. Career Cohen represented Great Britain at the Venice Biennial in 1966. Cohen moved to the United States as a visiting lecturer at the University of California, San Diego in 1968. He was later given the rank of professor and stayed at UC San Diego for nearly three decades, part of the time as chairman of the Visual Arts Department. Harold Cohen (soldier)
Harold Cohen (October 2, 1916 – August 15, 2006) was an American soldier who fought in France and Germany during World War II. He rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the United States Army and commanded the 10th Armored Infantry Battalion of the 4th Armored Division. Cohen received four Silver Stars, three Bronze Stars, three Purple Hearts, the Legion of Merit, the French Croix de Guerre, and the Distinguished Service Cross. He was a friend of future Army chief-of-staff Creighton Abrams. Early life and enlistment Cohen was born in Woodruff, South Carolina, on October 2, 1916, the son of a Lithuanian Jewish immigrant. He grew up in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Cohen attempted to enlist in the US Army after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 but was repeatedly rejected due to his poor vision. Harold Cohen Library
The Harold Cohen Library is the University of Liverpool's library on the north part of the city centre campus. Its resources cater for students studying within the Faculty of Science & Engineering and the Faculty of Health & Life Sciences, which includes the medical, dental and veterinary science courses. It also contains eight computer centres as well as the Wolfson training suite. The library was funded by a donation of £100,000 by Harold Cohen, chairman of Lewis's department store and the son of a former Lord Mayor of Liverpool. It was opened on 21 May 1938, in the presence of the Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin. Harold Cohen died, suddenly, in 1936 on the day he was to lay the building's foundation stone and also be conferred with the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws. He was awarded the degree posthumously, the only posthumous award of an honorary degree in the history of the University. The library's architect was Harold Dod.
