Harold Clive Newman
Harold Clive Newman (5 June 18966 December 1983) was an Australian public servant who was Commonwealth Auditor-General between 1955 and 1961. Biography Harold Clive Newman CBE was born in Charleston, South Australia on 5 June 1896 to George Charles Newman and his wife Maria Mary (née Carmichael). He went to school at Charleston and Lobethal and then to the Adelaide School of Mines. He started work as a relief telegraph messenger at Woodside Post Office in 1910 and made permanent on 26 August 1911.Interview by Ian Hamilton in National Library of Australia He claimed that the date of birth in his war records was a mistake. When war broke out in August, 1914 he joined the 9th Light Horse Regiment and he went ashore with it at Gallipoli on 20 May 1915 and served continuously on the peninsula until the last night of the evacuation 19–20 December 1915. Royal Canberra Golf Club
The Canberra Golf Club, later known as the Royal Canberra Golf Club, was formed in 1926. Its original grounds were behind the Hotel Canberra on the river flats on both sides of the Molonglo River. History The club's Club House was on a site near the Albert Hall and included the old brick fireplace and chimney of the nearby Kaye family's slab cottage. Victor John William "Vic" Skermer (1908November 1992) was an Australian public servant. He was Commonwealth Auditor-General between June 1961 and May 1973. James Brophy (Public Servant)
James Brophy (26 September 188924 May 1969) was a public servant who was Commonwealth Auditor-General between 1951 and 1955. Biography James Brophy was born on 26 September 1889 in South Melbourne, Victoria eldest child of Richard Brophy, labourer, and his wife Catherine, née Mackey, both from Ireland. On 14 January 1922 he married Elizabeth Constance Ridley at St Brigid's Catholic Church, Red Hill, Brisbane. They had ten children. She died in 1965. They moved to Melbourne, Victoria in 1927 and to Canberra in 1930. He was appointed Papal Knight-Commander of the Order of St. Gregory the Great in 1951 by Pope Pius XII. He was awarded the Companion of the Imperial Service Order in the Queen’s birthday honours list in 1954. The "Last Post" is either an A or a B♭ bugle call, primarily within British infantry and Australian infantry regiments, or a D or an E♭ cavalry trumpet call in British cavalry and Royal Regiment of Artillery (Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Artillery), and is used at Commonwealth military funerals, and ceremonies commemorating those who have died in war. Its duration varies typically from a little over one minute to nearly three minutes. For ceremonial use, the "Last Post" is often followed by "The Rouse", or less frequently the longer "Reveille". The two regimental traditions have separate music for the call.
