Haro Woods
Haro Woods is one of the few urban forests remaining in the Saanich, British Columbia, Municipality of Saanich, one of the 13 municipalities which make up the Capital Regional District, British Columbia, Capital Regional District (CRD) on the south portion of Vancouver Island (CRD includes and 3 electoral areas, also). It is similar in beauty to Mystic Vale, the forested ravine located to the south east and outside of the University of Victoria (UVIC) campus. Mystic Vale is on the list of protected areas of British Columbia. Geography and Location The total area of Haro Woods is about 9 hectares (approx. 22.25 acres). The northwest half (4.5 hectares, or 11.1 acres) is owned by the Queen Alexandra Foundation for Children's Health. The southeast half of Haro Woods is now split between the Municipality of Saanich (3 hectares, or about 7.4 acres) and UVIC (1.5 hectares, or about 3.7 acres). An urban forest is a forest, or a collection of trees, that grow within a city, town or a suburb. In a wider sense, it may include any kind of woody plant vegetation growing in and around human settlements. As opposed to a forest park, whose ecosystems are also inherited from wilderness leftovers, urban forests often lack amenities like public bathrooms, paved paths, or sometimes clear borders which are distinct features of parks. Care and management of urban forests is called urban forestry. Urban forests can be privately and publicly owned. Some municipal forests may be located outside of the town or city to which they belong. Urban forests play an important role in ecology of human habitats in many ways. Saanich ( ) is a district municipality on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, within the Greater Victoria area. The Capital Regional District (CRD) is a local government administrative district encompassing the southern tip of Vancouver Island and the southern Gulf Islands in the Canadian province of British Columbia. Mystic Vale
Mystic Vale is a forested ravine that was acquired by the University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, in 1993. It is located outside the ring road to the southeast of campus. Its tree canopy is dominated by large specimens of Douglas-fir and grand fir. A few western red cedar also occur. Scattered among these conifers are deciduous trees such as bigleaf maple, black cottonwood, and willow. Some Garry oak is present at the forest edge. Canada's only native broadleaf evergreen tree, the arbutus, is also present. Mystic Vale is one of the popular green spaces on campus as thousands of students and community members use the area each year for recreation. Cadboro Bay, British Columbia
Cadboro Bay is a bay near the southern tip of Vancouver Island and its adjacent neighbourhood in the municipalities of Saanich and Oak Bay in Greater Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Cadboro Bay was the site of Sungayka, a village of the Songhees Nation for some 8,000 years prior to the relocation of its people to Victoria's Inner Harbour in the mid 1800s.
