Harney Lake
Harney Lake is a shallow alkali lake basin located in southeast Oregon, United States, approximately south of the city of Burns, Oregon, Burns. The lake lies within the boundary of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge and is the lowest point in the Donner und Blitzen River, Blitzen Valley drainage. History The lake has been known by several names, including Salt Lake in 1838, Tonowama, and Lake Harney. Despite a history of 9,000 years of human inhabitation on Harney Lake by the Northern Paiute, Northern Paiute Indians primarily as nomadic wintering camps, little sign of modern human habitation is evident on Harney Lake. Malheur Lake
Malheur Lake is one of the lakes in the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Harney County in the U.S. state of Oregon. Located about southeast of Burns, the lake is marsh fed by the Donner und Blitzen River from the south and the Silvies River from the north. Malheur Lake periodically overflows into Mud Lake to the west and thence to Harney Lake, the sink of Harney Basin. The western area of Malheur Lake consists of ponds separated by small islands and peninsulas. The lake's central and eastern sections are more open. The generally shallow water is suitable habitat for migratory birds, waterfowl, and aquatic plants. As is typical of Great Basin lakes, Malheur Lake's surface area changes dramatically with the local weather, climate, and season because the lake is in a very flat basin. Frenchglen Highway
Oregon Route 205 (OR 205) is a state highway in Harney County, Oregon, running from Roaring Springs Ranch to OR 78 near Burns. OR 205 is known as the Frenchglen Highway No. 440 (see Oregon highways and routes). It is long and runs north–south, connecting the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge to Burns. The highway has also been designated the High Desert Discovery Scenic Byway by the Bureau of Land Management. Part of OR 205 also is used in the Steens Mountain Back Country Byway, a loop road around Steens Mountain. Route description OR 205 begins at the Roaring Springs Ranch as a continuation of Catlow Valley Road, which connects with Nevada State Route 292 near Denio, Nevada. Steens Mountain is in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Oregon, and is a large fault-block mountain. High Desert (Oregon)
The Oregon high desert is a region of the U.S. state of Oregon located east of the Cascade Range and south of the Blue Mountains, in the central and eastern parts of the state. Divided into a southern region and a northern region, the desert covers most of five Oregon counties and averages above sea level. The southwest region is part of the Great Basin and the southeast is the lower Owyhee River watershed. The northern region is part of the Columbia Plateau, where higher levels of rainfall allow the largest industry on private land to be the cultivation of alfalfa and hay. Public land within the region is owned primarily by the Bureau of Land Management, which manages more than including five rivers designated as Wild and Scenic. ''Artemia'' is a genus of aquatic crustaceans also known as brine shrimp. It is the only genus in the family Artemiidae. Narrows, Oregon
Narrows, or The Narrows, is an unincorporated community in Harney County, Oregon, United States. It was started as a community in 1889 by Lewis B. Springer and Albert Hembree. A post office was established in August 1889 and Springer, the postmaster, named it after himself. In April 1892 the name was changed to Narrows and Hembree became postmaster.
