Harley Cokeliss
Harley Cokeliss (born Harley Louis Cokliss, February 11, 1945) is an American director, writer and producer of film and television. Early life Originally brought up in Chicago, he moved to Britain in 1966 to study at the London Film School, and spent the majority of his career in the UK. Career Cokeliss started making documentaries for British television in 1970, including the first filmed version of J. G. Ballard's story ''Crash!''. Papers relating to the film ''Crash!'' are available at the British Library (Add MS 89171/1). Cokeliss's initial treatment and Ballard's draft script for ''Crash!'' are published in ''Crash: The Collector's Edition,'' ed. Chris Beckett. Cokeliss later graduated to making feature films, serving as second unit director on ''The Empire Strikes Back'' before helming films like ''Battletruck'', ''Black Moon Rising'', and ''Malone''. ''That Summer!'' is a 1979 British drama film directed by Harley Cokeliss and starring Ray Winstone, Tony London, Emily Moore and Julie Shipley. It was Ray Winstone's theatrical film debut, playing the character Steve Brodie. Plot It is the story of a 21-year-old named Steve Brodie (Ray Winstone) who goes to the Devon seaside resort of Torquay after leaving borstal where he is seen easily winning in a swimming race. He befriends the son of a butcher from London named Jimmy (Tony London) and they start dating two girls from Northern England. Steve works in a pub, Jimmy hires skiffs on the beach and the girls are employed as chambermaids at a hotel. ''The Atrocity Exhibition'' is an experimental novel of linked stories or "condensed novels" by British writer J. G. Ballard. The book was originally published in the UK in 1970 by Jonathan Cape. After a 1970 edition by Doubleday & Company had already been printed, Nelson Doubleday Jr. personally cancelled the publication and had the copies destroyed, fearing legal action from some of the celebrities depicted in the book. Thus, the first US edition was published in 1972 by Grove Press under the title ''Love and Napalm: Export USA''. It was made into a film by Jonathan Weiss in 2000. A revised large format paperback edition, with annotations by the author and illustrations by Phoebe Gloeckner, was issued by RE/Search in 1990. The edition with annotations is now standard.
