Harlem (CTA Green Line Station)
Harlem/Lake, announced as Harlem, is a station on the Chicago Transit Authority's 'L' system, serving the Green Line. It is the northwestern terminus of the Green Line. History The station opened on October 28, 1962 and was formerly called Harlem Terminal. The Lake Street Elevated went further through Oak Park and was built to Marion Street in 1901 and extended just a few blocks west past Harlem Avenue to Forest Park station on May 20, 1910. It was built at street-level and the tracks also paralleled the adjacent Chicago & North Western Railroad and the street-level operation began to result a number of crossing accidents for both railroads, typically due to pedestrians and wagon drivers failing to take note of approaching trains. Harlem Avenue is a major north–south street located in Chicago and its west, southwest, and northwest suburbs. It stretches from Glenview Road in Glenview to the intersection of East South Street and South Drecksler Road in Peotone, where it diverges into Illinois Route 50. At , it is the third-longest street in the United States, after Telegraph Road in southeastern Michigan and O Street in Nebraska. For most of its length, it carries Illinois Route 43. Harlem is a Chicago "L" station serving the Blue Line (CTA), Blue Line's O'Hare branch. It is not to be confused with the other Blue Line station. Harlem is a station on the 'L' system, serving the Blue Line's Forest Park branch in Forest Park, Illinois. The station was built with an auxiliary entrance at Circle Avenue that was eventually converted to an single turnstile facility. Forest Park was an at-grade station on the Chicago Transit Authority's 'L' system, serving as the former western terminus of the Lake Street Elevated. History The station was opened in 1910 as part of an extension of the Lake Street "L" into the Chicago and North Western Transportation Company's Forest Park yard. The Marion station had served as the terminal of the line since 1901. Passenger service was operated with a single track, but was expanded to two tracks by 1946. In 1962, the at-grade stations of the Lake Street "L" were moved onto the abandoned C&NW embankment, as the local stations had been abandoned since 1958. Lake Street Elevated
The Lake Street Elevated, also known as the Lake branch, is a long branch of the Chicago "L" which is located west of the Chicago Loop and serves the Green Line for its entire length, as well as the Pink Line east of Ashland Avenue. As of February 2013, the branch serves an average of 27,217 passengers each weekday. It serves the Near West Side, East Garfield Park, West Garfield Park, and Austin neighborhoods of Chicago, as well as the suburbs Oak Park and Forest Park.
