Hares Branch is a long 2nd order tributary to the Worrell Mill Swamp via Worrell Millpond in Hertford County, North Carolina. This is the only stream of this name in the United States. Course Hares Branch rises on the Panther Swamp divide about 0.5 miles south of Murfreesboro, North Carolina, and then flows northeasterly to join Worrell Mill Swamp on the east side of Murfreesboro. Watershed Hares Branch drains of area, receives about 48.3 in/year of precipitation, has a wetness index of 515.21, and is about 23% forested. Hertford County, North Carolina
Hertford County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 21,552. Its county seat is Winton. It is classified within the region known in the 21st century as the Inner Banks. History Hertford County is home of the Meherrin Indian Tribe, descendants of indigenous people who had inhabited the region for many centuries. After decades of encroachment by English colonists, the Tribe moved south from Virginia, where they settled in 1706 on a reservation abandoned by the Chowanoke. This six-square-mile reservation was at Parker's Ferry near the mouth of the Meherrin River. It was confirmed by a treaty of 1726. However, they were not able to keep the reservation lands. The Tribe today has approximately 900 enrolled members, most living within 10–15 miles of the former reservation. The tribe is recognized by the state and is seeking Federal recognition. Murfreesboro, North Carolina
Murfreesboro is a town in Hertford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,835 at the 2010 census. The town is home to Chowan University. Geography Murfreesboro is located in northwestern Hertford County at (36.440983, -77.096901), on high ground south of the Meherrin River. U.S. Route 258 runs through the eastern end of the town, and U.S. Route 158 bypasses the town to the south. US-258 leads southwest to Tarboro and northeast to Franklin, Virginia, while US-158 leads east to Winton, the Hertford county seat, and west to Roanoke Rapids. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which are land and , or 2.27%, are water.
