Haren-South railway station (french: Gare de Haren-Sud, nl, Station Haren-Zuid), officially Haren-South (french: Haren-Sud, link=no, nl, Haren-Zuid, link=no), is a railway station on line 36 of the Belgian railway network. It is situated in Haren, part of the City of Brussels in the Brussels-Capital Region, Belgium. The train services are operated by the National Railway Company of Belgium (NMBS/SNCB). Also in Haren, despite its name to the south-east along Oude Middelweg, is Haren railway station, on line 26. Belgian Railway Line 36
The Belgian railway line 36 is a railway line in Belgium connecting Brussels to Liège. Completed in 1866, the line runs 99.3 km. Trains running between Brussels and Aachen in Germany use the line as far as Liège, and then line 37 between Liège and the German border, the last stop in Belgium being Welkenraedt. Between Schaarbeek and Leuven, the line is 4-track; the outer tracks serve local trains with many stops, while the central tracks carry intercity and high-speed trains; these are called L36N, and branch off after Leuven onto a separate route that mostly follows the E5 motorway towards Liege. Rail Transport In Belgium
Belgium has an extensive rail network. It is a member of the International Union of Railways (UIC). The UIC Country Code for Belgium is 88. History On May 5, 1835, the first railway in continental Europe opened between Brussels-Groendreef/Allée verte and Mechelen. Some sort of railroad or canal had been envisaged as early as 1830. The feasibility of a railroad was investigated by engineers Pierre Simons and Gustave De Ridder. The first trains were Stephenson engines imported from Great Britain. The engines were called ''Pijl'' meaning Arrow, ''Olifant'' meaning Elephant, and 'Stephenson' (named after its designer). They pulled bench-cars and diligences. On the return from Mechelen, the ''Olifant'' pulled all 30 cars. By 1840, Ghent, Bruges, Ostend, Antwerp, Mechelen, Brussels and Leuven were connected. Belgian Railway Line 26
The Belgian railway line 26 is a railway line connecting Brussels to Halle in Belgium. It first opened on July 19, 1926, between Schaarbeek and Watermael railway stations. The line was completed on January 3, 1930. It was conceived as a circumvention of Brussels before the North–South connection existed, which opened only in 1952. Today all passenger trains using the line travel from Vilvoorde on a branch line called 26/1 and not from Schaarbeek, to various destinations South of Brussels. The line carries (parts of) several services of the GEN/RER: S4, S5, S7, S9. Some of these use the Schuman-Josaphat tunnel, which branches off just South of Meiser station.
