Hardscramble is the name given to an early 1800s stone structure located near Seguin, Texas, that was used as a home station by some of the earliest and most famous of Texas Ranger Division, Texas Rangers. History According to research for a Texas historical marker, Hardscramble located on 1806 Tschoepe Rd., Seguin, Texas was the home station of early Texas Rangers, Henry Eustace McCulloch, Henry McCulloch and Benjamin McCulloch from 1841 until 1853. Nathaniel Benton occupied the building in 1858 and later in 1871, it was home to Elijah Dale. A Texas Centennial marker was placed to honor the location and its history in 1936. The old ranger station and marker still stand at the location and occasional tours can be arranged locally. A second and older adobe Seguin Walnut Springs Park, Walnut Branch Ranger Station and hospital once stood at the corner of Court and Guadalupe Streets. Seguin, Texas
Seguin ( ) is a city in and the county seat of Guadalupe County, Texas, United States; as of the 2020 census, its population was 29,433. Its economy is primarily supported by a regional hospital, as well as the Schertz-Seguin Local Government Corporation water-utility, that supplies the surrounding Greater San Antonio areas from nearby aquifers as far as Gonzales County. Several dams in the surrounding area are governed by the main offices of the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority, headquartered in downtown Seguin. Seguin, named in honor of Juan Seguín, a Tejano Texian freedom fighter and early supporter of the Republic of Texas, is one of the oldest towns in Texas, founded just 16 months after the Texas Revolution began. Henry Eustace McCulloch (December 6, 1816 – March 12, 1895) was a soldier in the Texas Revolution, a Texas Ranger, and a brigadier general in the army of the Confederate States during the American Civil War. Early life McCulloch was born in Rutherford County, Tennessee, one of twelve children of Alexander McCulloch and Frances Fisher LeNoir. Henry's father Alexander, a Yale University graduate, was a descendant of Captain Nicolas Martiau, the French Huguenot settler of Jamestown, Virginia and ancestor of President George Washington. Seguin Walnut Springs Park
Walnut Springs Park (also known as the Walnut Branch Walk) in Seguin, Texas is a network of walkways and bridges along the banks of Walnut Branch, a small tributary of the Guadalupe River. The stream is fed by various small springs. The main one near Court St. was filled in for parking, but the water still trickles out from the beneath the fill. The park is an important part of the city's urban fabric and a historic attraction in its own right. History The town of Seguin was founded in 1838 just a few blocks from the springs. Many of the earliest and then some of the best homes erected in the 19th century were along Walnut Branch, which provided clean water for animals, laundry, and cleaning. Matthew Caldwell, (March 8, 1798 – December 28, 1842), also spelled Mathew Caldwell was a 19th-century Texas settler, military figure, Captain of the Gonzales – Seguin Rangers and a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Because of his recruitment ride ahead of the Battle of Gonzales, some call him the Paul Revere of Texas.
