Hardscrabble or Hard Scrabble is land that is rocky or of poor quality, as in the term ''hardscrabble farm''. It is often used as a euphemism for any sort of hard working or poverty, as in ''hardscrabble childhood''. Hardscrabble (Harrisburg)
Hardscrabble was a small settlement of mostly frame structures in Midtown Harrisburg, Pennsylvania from late 18th century to 1924, so named because of its reputation as a rough place. It was bounded by the Susquehanna River to the west, Calder Street to the north, Herr Street to the South and overlapping Front street to the east. Due to the prominence of the logging industry at the time, it was a riverside congregation area for the workers containing boat liveries, lumber mills and other business related to the river trade. Upon the decline of logging and river coal dredging, the area fell into disrepair by the early 20th Century. In the midst of the City Beautiful Movement in the early 1900s, the City Council was working to improve the city by paving streets and erecting steps on and paving the esplanade along Riverfront Park. Hazel Green is a town in Grant County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,043 at the 2000 census. The Village of Hazel Green is located partially within the town. The unincorporated community of Prairie Corners is located in the town. The unincorporated community of Sinsinawa, Wisconsin, is also located partially in the town. Hardscrabble Farm
Hardscrabble Farm is a historic farm property in rural Searsmont, Maine. Located south of its village center at 122 Maine State Route 131, the property features a typical New England connected farmstead with a c. 1840s Greek Revival farmhouse. The property is notable as the leisure time summer residence of author Ben Ames Williams, who fictionalized Searsmont as the town of "Fraternity" in his works. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. Hardscrabble, also known as Pleasant Grove, is a historic plantation home located near Bahama, Durham County, North Carolina. It consists of two houses, one Georgian and one Federal, covered by a common cross-gable roof in the late-19th century. The Georgian was built about 1779 and the Federal section in the 1790s. Grant's Farm
Grant's Farm is a historic farm, and long-standing landmark in Grantwood Village, Missouri, built by Ulysses S. Grant on land given to him and his wife by his father in law Frederick Fayette Dent shortly after they became married in 1848. It has also served as a residence of various members of the Busch family. Description and history The property was at one time owned by Ulysses S. Grant and prior to that, by the Dent family. Since 1903 it has been owned by the Busch family, who previously owned the Anheuser-Busch Brewing Company until it was sold to InBev in 2008. Originally a private deer park for the Busch Family, Grant's Farm has been an animal reserve since 1954. It is open to the public for free; however, there is a parking fee of $18 per vehicle. This fee helps to maintain the farm and care for the animals. Hardscrabble River is the estuary of Wilson Stream, a small river in Washington County, Maine. From its source () in Charlotte, Wilson Stream runs about southeast to Dennys Bay. The Wet Mountains are a small mountain range in southern Colorado, named for the amount of snow they receive in the winter as compared to the dried Great Plains to the east. Hard Scrabble (Addison Hollow) and Snow Town were two African American neighborhoods located in Providence, Rhode Island in the nineteenth century. They were also the sites of race riots in which working-class whites destroyed multiple black homes in 1824 and 1831, respectively. Hard Scrabble Hard Scrabble was a predominantly black neighborhood in northwestern Providence in the early 19th century. Away from the town center, its inexpensive rents attracted working class free blacks, poor people of all races and marginalized businesses such as saloons and houses of prostitution. Scrabble is an unincorporated community in Berkeley County, West Virginia, United States. According to the Geographic Names Information System, the community has been known as Hard Scrabble, Hard Scrabble Town, and Hardscrabble throughout its history. The community most likely was so named on account of treacherous local terrain.
