Hard Rain (Bob Dylan Album)
''Hard Rain'' is a live album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on September 13, 1976 by Columbia Records. The album was recorded during the second leg of the Rolling Thunder Revue. The album was partly recorded on May 23, 1976, during a concert at Hughes Stadium (Fort Collins), Hughes Stadium in Fort Collins, Colorado; the penultimate show of the tour, the concert was also filmed and broadcast by NBC as a one-hour television special in September. (''Hard Rains release coincided with this broadcast). Four tracks from the album ("I Threw It All Away," "Stuck inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again," "Oh, Sister," and "Lay, Lady, Lay") were recorded on May 16, 1976 in Fort Worth, Texas. Bob Dylan
Bob Dylan (legally Robert Dylan, born Robert Allen Zimmerman, May 24, 1941) is an American singer-songwriter. Often regarded as one of the greatest songwriters of all time, Dylan has been a major figure in popular culture during a career spanning more than 60 years. Much of his most celebrated work dates from the 1960s, when songs such as "Blowin' in the Wind" (1963) and " The Times They Are a-Changin' (1964) became anthems for the civil rights and antiwar movements. His lyrics during this period incorporated a range of political, social, philosophical, and literary influences, defying pop music conventions and appealing to the burgeoning counterculture. Janet Maslin
Janet R. Maslin (born August 12, 1949) is an American journalist, best known as a film and literary critic for ''The New York Times''. She served as a ''Times'' film critic from 1977 to 1999 and as a book critic from 2000 to 2015. In 2000 Maslin helped found the Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville, New York. "I Threw It All Away" is a song by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan. The track appeared on Dylan's album ''Nashville Skyline'' in 1969, and was released as its first single later that year, where it reached number 85 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100, and number 30 on the UK Singles Chart. It is considered to be one of the best and most popular songs on the album. Music and lyrics "I Threw It All Away" was one of the first songs written for ''Nashville Skyline'' and one of only two new songs that were definitely written prior to the recording sessions (" Lay Lady Lay" being the other). "You're a Big Girl Now" is a song by Bob Dylan, released on his 15th studio album, ''Blood on the Tracks'', in 1975. It is one of five songs on the album that Dylan initially recorded in New York City in September 1974 and then re-recorded in Minneapolis in December that year. The latter recording, made on December 27, 1974, became the album track. Composition and recording Like most songs on ''Blood on the Tracks'', "You're a Big Girl Now" tells a story about two lovers that are breaking up. In the lyrics, the first-person narrator begs his lover to give him one more chance. Some critics have interpreted the song as being inspired by the tumult in Dylan's marriage to his then-wife Sara. "Shelter from the Storm" is a song by Bob Dylan, recorded on September 17, 1974, and released on his 15th studio album, ''Blood on the Tracks'', in 1975. It was later anthologized on the compilation album ''The Essential Bob Dylan'' in 2000. Composition and recording Dylan recorded five takes of the song on September 17, 1974 at A&R Recording in New York City, with the fifth take the one that was included on ''Blood on the Tracks''. Dylan sang, and played guitar and harmonica, accompanied by Tony Brown on bass. Both Robert Shelton and Oliver Trager describe the song's narrator's mood as "tempest-tossed", with Shelton saying that the song explores a "search for salvation through love" and has similarities to the work of W. "Lay Lady Lay", sometimes rendered "Lay, Lady, Lay", is a song written by Bob Dylan and originally released in 1969 on his '' Nashville Skyline'' album. Like many of the tracks on the album, Dylan sings the song in a low croon, rather than in the high nasal singing style associated with his earlier (and eventually later) recordings. The song has become a standard and has been covered by numerous bands and artists over the years. Bob Dylan version "Lay Lady Lay" was originally written for the soundtrack of the movie ''Midnight Cowboy'' but wasn't submitted in time to be included in the finished film. Joel Whitburn said instead that the song was "written for his wife Sarah Lowndes". Jacques Levy
Jacques Levy (July 29, 1935 – September 30, 2004) was an American songwriter, theatre director and clinical psychologist. Early life and education Levy was born in New York City in 1935 and graduated from the City College of New York in 1956. He then received his M.A. (1958) and Ph.D. (1961) in psychology from Michigan State University and was certified by the Menninger Institute for Psychoanalysis in Topeka, Kansas. After returning to New York, he practiced as a clinical psychologist while pursuing his avocation in the city's experimental theatre scene. "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again" (also listed as "Memphis Blues Again") is a song written by Bob Dylan that appears on his 1966 album ''Blonde on Blonde''. The album version also appears on 1971's ''Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits Vol. II''. An early studio take, done in a faster tempo, was released on '' The Bootleg Series Vol. 7: No Direction Home: The Soundtrack'' in 2005. As the recording indicates, Dylan had difficulty fitting the words to the tempo, and evidently this led to its rearrangement, as heard on ''Blonde on Blonde'', in a more "rock"-oriented 4/4 time.
