Henry Harben (insurer)
Sir Henry Harben (24 August 1823 – 2 December 1911) was a British pioneer of industrial life assurance. Family Harben was the eldest son of Henry Harben of Bloomsbury by his wife Sarah, daughter of Benjamin Andrade. He was first cousin to Joseph Chamberlain. The Harben family was originally engaged in banking at Lewes, but Henry's grandfather was a partner in the provision stores of Harben & Larkin of Whitechapel, London, and his father also carried on a wholesale business in the City. Career After a few years in his uncle's stores, Harben was articled to a surveyor, but left that calling in March 1852, when he became accountant of the Prudential Mutual Assurance, Investment and Loan Association. The company was founded in a small way at Blackfriars in 1848 and had met with little success. Henry Devenish Harben
Henry Devenish Harben (1874 – 18 May 1967) was a British barrister and Liberal Party politician who later joined the Labour Party. He was a notable supporter of women's suffrage. Early life He was the son of Henry Andrade Harben and the grandson of Sir Henry Harben who founded Prudential Assurance, Harben was educated at Eton College and Magdalen College, Oxford, before qualifying as a barrister. He married Agnes Helen Bostock. Henry Eric Southey Harben
Major Henry Eric Southey Harben (1 August 1900 – 1 October 1971) was an English cricketer. Harben was a right-handed batsman, though his bowling style is unknown. Personal life and death The son of Henry Devenish Harben and Agnes Helen Bostock, he was born at Farnham, Surrey. Harben married Helen Prudence Ramsay, daughter of the cricketer Francis Ramsay, on 5 June 1927, though the couple later divorced. They had two children. He later married Iris Constance Kathleen de Stacpoole, daughter of George Edward Joseph Patrick de Stacpoole, 5th Duc de Stacpoole and Eileen Constance Palmer, on 29 April 1947, with the couple having three children. By 1970, Harben was living at Clonriff House, Oughterard, County Galway, Ireland. He died in Malta on 1 October 1971, aged 71. Philip Hubert Kendal Jerrold Harben (17 October 1906 – 27 April 1970) was an English cook, recognised as the first TV celebrity chef. Biography Harben was born in Fulham, London, and was educated at Highgate School. His mother, Mary Jerrold, was an actress known for her performance as the murderous Martha Brewster in the first stage production of '' Arsenic and Old Lace'' as well as many screen roles. His father, Hubert Harben, was a stage actor. His sister, Joan Harben, played Miss Mona Lott in the BBC Radio series ''It's That Man Again'' (ITMA). He learned to cook at the side of his parents, and "could scramble eggs and make mayonnaise long before I could read Thucydides or solve a quadratic equation".
